Good for hearing impaired
I bought these at the start of a 12 hour flight on board the aircraft, and honestly it was the best impulse buy ever. Not only did I not have to turn the volume up full to hear my iPod or the inflight films, but I was able to sleep well on the plane with the earphones on but not connected to a device (first time ever I've slept well on a plane, and I do a fair few long haul flights).
The batteries last for ages, and just make the whole flying experience better for me personally. I don't use them at other times, but I have lent them to my Mother, who is hearing impaired.
She loves them, because she finds it difficult to eliminate background noises, and the maximum volume on her portable DVD player is too low under even fairly quiet conditions. Using the headphones she can eliminate much of any background noise, and can still hear the quietest of dialogue/music etc on the DVD player without having to blast it at full volume.
It doesn't block out sudden noises, or higher frequency noise, but it is great for air travel. The only negative I found during my flights was the battery pack gizmo. On a few different flights I had nothing to clip the battery pack to when I fell asleep and so the battery pack kept falling off my lap, when it did that I got woken up by the sudden pull on the headphones, which is not that nice a way to wake up... might not happen to you though!

Brilliant for steady noises
I was very undecided after reading mixed reviews for this type of product but have been very please. They make a tremendous difference with regular noise. I find that on Aeroplanes they make a great reduction to the engine noise. if you listen to the movie or your IPOD at a comfortable level with the noise reduction on, and then turn it off, the background noise completely drowns the music. This just shows how effective they are. Being able to listen at this queiter level is good for your ears and general tiredness. The sound quality is very reasonable.
The phones have to be fitted carefully, and become uncomfortable after about 3 hrs. I find theat when I don't want to listen to music, I can just put them on to reduce noise levels.
They come with a nice case and adaptors for aeroplanes.

Truly amazing product
It's not often that I buy a product, switch it on and think instantly "That it is fantastic".
I bought some PXC300's having found that with my usual (Sennheiser sports headphones) setup I had to run the volume very high when on flights, trains etc, and the background noise was still intrusive. I was worried this might not be doing my hearing any good, so I bought the PXC's.
I tried these out in the car on the way home... started the engine... switched on the noise cancelling - simply amazing. It blocks backgound noise very effectively, though still allows some "regular" noise (someone talking for example) to get through.
I'm flying long haul next week, and can't wait to try them out properly.
An excellent product - Well done Sennheiser.

Swings and Roundabouts
I bought both the Sennheiser PXC 300 and Panasonic RP-HC300 to try. They are very different: the Panasonic has a detachable cord, which I love (great if you want noise cancellation without music or want to get up and walk around an aircraft cabin, say). The Panasonic cord is much more rugged, too, and doesn't have an awkward, heavy box hanging from it.
I like the Panasonic's enclosed ear pieces and it uses only one AAA instead of two. But it is much heavier and bulkier. It doesn't fold up small like the Sennheiser and it's case is about 3x the volume. But I didn't find the weight a problem - the 'phones were very comfortable, even on a long journey, and it was great not having a box on the cord. You do need a lot of space in your hand baggage, though - about 210x160x50. And I found it easy to switch the Panasonic on by accident, wasting the battery.
What about performance? I really don't know. I tried them on overground trains, underground train and planes, and kept changing my mind. Overall, I think the Panasonic does a better job of noise cancellation, although neither cuts out as much as I'd like. As for music, well, I listen to classics, and think I prefer the Panasonic sound, but there's not much in it, especially in a noisy environment. (These things only cut out deep, droning sounds, and then only the worst of them).
So, I'm keeping the Panasonic, but certainly wouldn't argue with anyone who chose the Sennheiser for it's compact travel dimensions and lightweight headset; look out for mine on eBay!

Pleased I bought them
I travel by air weekly and I've ummed and arred about buying noise cancelling headphones for sometime. At last I decided to purchase the Sennheiser PCX300 headphone prior to a 10hr flight. They are worth every penny.
They don't cancel out all noise but they cancel out most of the noise. I was sitting right next to the engines and I had my video volume tunred right down and the sound was clearer than I had ever heard on a flight before. Even when not listening to any audio, just having the noise cancelling switched on they provide a good level of noise cancellation, enough to help me get some sleep.
You really notice the difference when you take the headphones off, the noise is so loud in comparison.
I only wish I'd purchased these months ago.
