Dreadful film...
I watched this film with a growing sense of disbelief that Sergio Leone could make such rubbish after 'Once upon a time in the West' and his many other classics. Truly dreadful!

Interesting interplay between the two stars
This is the main reason to watch this spaghetti weatern, for me. The screenplay is pretty good too, and gives both actors plenty to chew on, especially the ever garrulous Mr Steiger. I like the real contrast of the two characters here, the laid back, laconic Irish rover of Coburn, against the fiery and arrogant Mexican bandit of Steiger. The friction between these two partners in convenience causes as much heat as their explosions. Leone's ambitious sweeping style makes this movie sag a little in the middle, but the novelty of the plot and the sizzling interplay between the two polar opposite personalities who mistrust and dislike each other but unite for sake of greed, make this movie worth staying with. My favourite Leone movie, and his partner's score is once again full of character and totally memorable.

A Fistful of Duck You Sucker in the Revolotion
Gui La Testa,Keep your head down the original title for the movie.
After Once upon a time in the West Sergio Leone vowed not to make another Western however he took the directos job on this movie originaly only suposed to be a director. At the time there was big talk on Sam Peckinpah and Sergio Leone directing this but unfortunetly it never happed.Duck You Sucker is the story of IRA Terriost John Mallory and Duan Miranda a mexican peasent a badito.Played by James Coburn the actor who was in the original Magnificent Seven but barely had even 11 sentances in the movie aswell a few James Bond Spoof comedys called "Flint" Was chosen for this movie.Leone wanted him to star as the man with no name charcter in Fistful of Dollars but there wasnt enough money to spend on a big Hollywood name.Rod Steiger who stars as Mexian peseant Duan Miranda won an oscar who hes performance in "The Heat of Night" also stared in Doctor Zhivago,However Eli Wallach (Tuco in Good the bad and the ugly)was first pick for the character of Duan Miranda. But due to the budget of this film United Artist could afford an Oscar winning actor.Eli Wallach was very sore about this.It has many title upon realease it was called "Duck You Sucker" after Leone was convinced that is what people were saying in America which they realy wasnt. It didnt do all that well at the box office it sounded like a Marx Brothers film or a Bugs Bunny Short.Renamed Fistful of dynamite.Leone was against this as it was not a tie in with the previous dollars trilogy.Named in France Once upon a time ....The Revolotion this title had major sucess with this film as it was seen a a huge refernce to the French Student Revolotion of 1968.It was heavyily cut in cinemas all the flashbacks taken out and the vulgarity of the swar words were exempt from the film. This could be what was responsible for it not doing very well at the box office as the flashbacks where a key part to the film without it there is no motive for John Mallory. This is Sergio Leones most mature film.John and Duan first meet after Duan and hes family rob what seems to be the biggest Stagecoach in cinema history.John arrives on a motorbike which is shot at by Duan then more of the typical macho i can do it better then you stuff like in for a few dollars more Happens.Duan Realises he can use John the explosives expert to rob the bank. The blow the bank up but the bank isnt full of gold but the result of what is found makes Duan a hero of the Revolotion.Ennio Morricone in what seems one of hes best scores of all time. This DVD is brilliant it has a good commentary from Sir Christopher Frayling,Lot of documentrys. It is in its Uncut version of 2 Hours and 30 minute there have been known versions to run for 1 hour and 39 minites on a realese in 1972.This is the ultimate edition of the movie.

Leone at his best
Once upon a time...The Revolution, as a reviewer puts it, is this films most appropriate title.
This film is a masterpiece, very different from the Eastwood 'Dollars' trilogy, refreshing, yet Leone through and through. The cinematography, gritty strong colour, the soundtrack, directing, brilliant.
Very political, and very real. As usual, we have violent scenes, classic scenes of surreal comedy and irony, drama and suspense, everything one expects from a Leone movie.
When I used to watch this film in my school and college days, I, along with friends paid attention to the 'classic' scenes and one liners throughout the movie, "I'm a citizen on the United States of America!...To me you're just a naked sonofabith.." etc. Watching it again, I must say, it's rich with political messages, drama and an interplay of realistic characters which represent the political climate of the time it was shot and the period it was set in, it has so much more than the other (masterpieces each and every one) Leone movies.
Rod Steiger is simply brilliant, the way he mixes black humour with violence and sentimentality is astounding. he can be cold, calculating, greedy, yet compassionate, sentimental, and too human.
Coburn is at his best, and the other lesser known Italian and Spanish/German actors play their parts with excellence.
All in all, a brilliant movie, a MUST see for any one who appreciates genius.
