Deeply unsatisfying and confusing.
Having never seen the critically acclaimed anime from which this is derived, I watched this film with the expectation of gaining some perspective with which to enjoy its companion-piece "End of Evangelion" pthis was definitely NOT the case, this film is absolutely indecipherable in its bullet-like ricochetting between time-frames,here 12 months ago, there 3 weeks ago, the other 2 years ago. pI have, as a result, just started watching (and greatly enjoying) the series proper and already I am feeling the effects of this catastrophically unsuccessful distillation of the storyline. pGO AND WATCH THE SERIES, NOT THIS, it's recycled clips of animation from the series has nothing to offer for one who has followed the storyline and to the unitiated it will do *nothing* other than create an impenetrable fog of unrelated plot-points while in one fell swoop, spoil all the surprises of the series as it is MEANT to be watched.pDo yourself a favour and buy the ACTUAL series, its really is fantastic, shortcuts like this will leave you feeling empty, confused and deeply unsatisfied, I absolutely guarantee it.

What an emotional and momentous movie.
I personally thought that both movies were marvelously expressed and mind blowing from the very start to the end. However I recommend that those manga fans that haven't seen the two movies nor the 26 episodes, are better off watching the episodes first, because then the movies give a much comprehensive conclusion to the story (movies). Can get confusing at times, but on the whole easy to follow. The movies and 26 episodes are full of laughter, tears and frenetic action. Everything you want is obtainable. With a bit of imagination and a very intellectual minded director, hence you end up with Neon Genesis Evangelion (Death Rebirth - The End of Evangelion) beautiful Superb!!!

Beautiful and horrible all at once
Please watch the whole series first. Beleive me, its better this way. Finally released in a box set, with the much better US artwork (the UK releases art was poor in comparison).pEveryone draws there own conclusions from Eva, and these ending movies gave me a feeling in my stomach no movie has ever managed. pI felt physically shaken, angry, and happy all at the same time by the End Of Evangelion.pThe end of this monumental TV series was met with much controversy, its conclusion was confusing and somewhat disatisfying to many of the shows legion of fans (Death threats were actually levelled at Hideki Anno after the series 26th episode aired in Japan, which are actually featured in a montage in the final movie).pThe first movie is a recap of the 26 episode series (now available in remastered "Platinum" releases: Highly reccomended), but serves as a poor substitute for experiencing the rollercoaster of emotions that is the series. You get what happened in a hurried and truncated form, but none of the massive range of feelings you get from following the whole series.pThe second movie in this a retelling of the much talked about final 3 episodes. This is a literal view of events, giving a traditional finale rather than the series fascinatingly abstract thematic ending. This is solid and tangible, and serves a bitter and fraught ending to the most controversial and affecting anime series ever.pCinematically released, the animation is much better than the original episodes, and is a technically very good. The imagery ranges from intensley stark, to truly beautiful at the same time, by the end the juxtaposition of visuals is so effective, making its events even harder to watch for fans im sure.pRather than making the series better, it adds a tiny amount of satisafaction for having a "proper" ending, while leaving the viewer (in my personal experience) with a revelatory view of the characters you follow and root for for 26 episodes. The fate of the world is not pretty, and some of it I found almost unbearably heart breaking, a feeling not mirrored by friends who viwed only the movies without seeing the series.pAsks more questions than it answers, but many answers, you can find in your own "instrumentality".

Stunning but deeply flawed
This new movie boxset means you can now build the ultimate Evangelion collection along with the Platinum editions of the TV series that are now available.pThe set is in a three disc gatefold that is housed in a slip case.pThe Evangelion movies were released after the TV series came to it's confusing and disappointing conclusion. Death and Rebirth is essential a compilation of episodes 1-24 and provides the prelude to the End of Evangelion movie that replaces episodes 25 26.pHaving the two movies together is helpful as you shouldn't try and watch End of Evangelion unless you have either the TV series or the first movie recently as too much will be unexplained because as you probably know Neon Genesis Evangelion is a very complex show.pEnd of Evangelion starts with the NERV headquaters being attacked as SEELE tries to capture the EVA units and their pilots so start the next evolution of mankind. The battle scene between Asuka and the prototype EVA units is fantastic, dramatic as it is gory. But when we get into the 'episode 26' part of End of Evangelion the story becomes less straight forward and the deep philosophy begins and the film ends with a long and drawn out sequence with Shinji and Asuka which finishes very abruptly. To me this provides a slightly more satisfactory but still disappointing end to one of the greatest anime series ever.pEnd of Evangelion pushes the boundaries of film making and story telling and that's one of the reasons why I love anime so much and this sort of vision is very rarely seen anywhere else. It's just that I think End of Evangelion goes too deep for it's own good sometimes.pBut despite my reservations you will not be disappointed with the discs. The video transfers are absolutely pixel perfect - just stunning. The actions scenes are so fluid and crisp, these are some of the best transfers I have ever seen. Plus you get decent soundtracks especially on End of Evangelion, which even gets DTS 6.1, and makes good use of all the extra speakers with some good surround and sub effects.pThere some worthwhile extras available too especially the commentaries which provide some insight into what's going on on screen.pIf you don't already own one or either of the movies on DVD then definitely buy this box set, otherwise it probably isn't worth it although big EVA fans may want to upgrade anyway.pOverall an excellent presentation of a stunning but deeply flawed film, if you're an anime fan End of Evangelion needs to be in your collection regardless of what you think of it.
