The sound quality is excellent and it's a real privilege to see one of the Great Ladies of jazz perform some truly beautiful pieces of music. She manages to show both her complete mastery of the medium, her humility, her humour and her humanity. I do agree with other reviewers that 'Hey Jude' and some of the other more modern interpretations may not be to everyone's taste, but this is well worth buying for , I would say at least ten out of the fourteen tracks. I particularly love 'A Man and a Woman' and 'This Girl's In Love With You'
This dvd of Ella live for the first time at the montreux festival shows ellas beautifull voice before it changes slightly with more vibrato she sings some wonderfull songs here and shows how she manages to sing through phrases effortlessly.
a real tear jearking song "a house is not a home" is sung with such tenderness and softly its hard to belive that its her who sings it.Another great dvd to add to any ella collection
Another in the series of surprise releases from Norman Granz' Montreaux collections, this is a priceless example of Ella in live performance. Supported by her fine trio, she works through mostly new additions to her repertoire, from an album she had just done called Sunshine of Your Love. Like many great jazz/pop singers of her generation, the late 1960s found her attempting to broaden her songbook to include more contemporary numbers. Ella sounds uncertain and uncharacteristically tentative - even apologetic - on some of these. Personally I hated Hey Jude and the rock&roll version of Love You Madly. But her voice has the last of it's velvet smoothness and lightness of tone here, especially in the ballad selections, that she was to lose within a year or two as ill-health changed her voice - though not necessarily for the worse, as the Ella/Basie dvd from 1979 amply shows.
