Everyone should have a copy
It should be pointed out that this is, in fact, the UK edition of this album, which ditches the cover versions and inserts tracks from her previous album, "Steady Pull", which was unreleased over here. There are a couple of problems with this: splicing together two different albums breaks the flow of both and does neither its full justice. Added to which, the three cover versions on the original US edition were -- to my surprise -- quite fantastic. This is the only reason I give it four stars rather than five.

But, anyway: on this, Jonatha departs slightly from the more rocking approach of "Steady Pull" and adds a subtle layer of electronica that complements her voice fantastically. It's one of those albums that, at first, I thought wouldn't work but does. It not only works, but it became one of my favourite albums of the year, one I kept returning to again and again, and each time it was like coming home.

If you've never experienced Jonatha Brooke, this is as good a place as any to start, I suppose, but as she's one of the best singer/songwriters working today, with none of that introverted angst or self-consciousness that can affect the genre but with a great voice and a wonderfully personable stage presence, you'd do just as well to track down all her albums in their original states, if this tickles your fancy. Go on -- you'll be glad you did.

Disappointing music from a fine artist
Jonatha Brooke has made a number of thoughtful, engaging and rewarding albums, but this is a real disappointment. Following the beautiful "Plumb", "10 Cent Wings" and "Steady Pull" - all of which repay close and repeated listening - this album is a collection of forgettable songs and pointless cover versions, including a particularly baffling version of God Only Knows. Jonatha Brooke can do much better than this - let's hope it's just treading water until she comes back with something as essential as her earlier works (above).

An incredible record and singer.
For her trusty followers, Jonatha has been worshipped and admired for many years. Her fan base in the UK has recently been enjoying her presence at some incredibly intimate venues and have been treated to the 'not to be missed' experience of Jonatha's live vocals and amazing accoustic guitar.

For me, Back in the Circus is definitely her best release ever, and I would encourage everyone in the UK to embrace and support Jonatha. She's most definitely worth it. So, do yourself a favour, buy this record. Better still, catch one of her live gigs in London during March 05, then buy two !
