evangelion rip-off?
At first glance the story of Rahxephon sounds suspiciously similar to that of Neon Genesis Evangelion. And it is true the two stories do have a lot in common! -but, nevertheless, they are two distinctly different stories, and the author of this review takes the side of the Rahxephon.
First let me make it clear that I have the greatest respect for Evangelion, it is an amazing anime that no one should have to live without. With that said one might wonder how I can claim that Rahxephon is better. But it is simple: everything Neon Genesis Evangelion brought, Rahxephon brings twice as well.
Evangelion was driven by a massive philosophical plot, giving it a dull appearance. The greatest strength of it being the uncertainty with witch it was put forth. You always had to have the next episode, because maybe you would understand everything better, only the moment of understanding was never as clear as one could have wanted.
The story of Rahxephon is character-driven, and compared to the characters of Evangelion these have what it takes to hold it up. In my humble opinion given Rahxephon a much more mature and trustworthy story.
My advice to you is not to let this anime slip past you just because you thought it sounded like a rip-off. It is an incredible story about learning who you really are and where you belong. And it is a definite must-have for anyone who loved Evangelion, but sat at the ending thinking it could have been different, and thus much better.
