IMPORTANT INFO. FOR ANYONE LOOKING TO BUY THIS CD
This CD, whilst a great compilation of Lynyrd Skynyrd's most noted songs, appears to have a manufacturing/recording flaw in it. I have tried a couple of copies of this CD, and both have had the same flaw in it, so it appears every copy has it. In the last 30 seconds of the song "Simple Man", one of Skynyrd's finest in my opinion, the sound suddenly goes strange for about 2 seconds before returning to normal. It's not a jump in the CD, the sound quality just goes strange, and strange is the only word to describe it. As I mentioned, I have purchased more than one copy of this CD as I presumed this flaw would not be in all the copies, but it has been there in all the copies I've purchased, and I've had to return them all. When listening to the CD on a high quality stereo, this sound defect is hardly audible, if at all, but when listening to it through lower quality equipment, such as laptop computer speakers it is much more evident to the listener, and when listening to it through headphones, it completely spoils the song. I would therefore recommend to anyone looking to purchase this CD that they opt for an alternative Lynyrd Skynyrd greatest hits compilation, as many are available, including: Greatest Hits, The Collection, Gold And Platinum, and All Time Greatest Hits. The disadvantage of these titles, compared to this one I'm reviewing, is that they are only one disc, and therefore have less songs on them, but they will hopefully not have this manufacturing/recording fault in them. As of yet, I am unsure though. I hope to acquire one of the titles listed above soon as a replacement for this CD, which song-wise, is a great CD. Shame about the poor manufacturing/recording quality!

Great southern rock
Up until fairly recently, the only Lynyrd Skynyrd songs I knew were Freebird and Sweet Home Alabama. However, after hearing some of their other songs played on Planet Rock, I purchased this album.

It's bowled me over. Yes, it could be better packaged, but the music is terrific. Wonderful southern ,laid back, witty southern rock.

Great Southern drawl electric Blues
Many years ago I bought Lynryd Skynards "One from the Road" double live album. It was alright but nothing too exceptional. When I bought this I was blown away by how much these studio recordings added to their overall sound. There's some nice variations between the gentler acoustic sounding stuff, and the twin or triplet guitar hero stuff, all augmented with some cracking keyboards.
They're well crafted, thoughtful songs, soaked in whiskey and deep south philosophy. Nice lyrics and you can actually hear the words, good tunes and some excellent give-it-large solos. If you're after a taste of Alabama then this fits the bill perfectly. P.S. It goes without saying but there's no racist crap here, although conscious of their history it's a celebration of integration, not segregation.

Heresy
Be warned: the following is a heresy. This album ain't as good as it's cracked up to be.

Disc one is topped and tailed by Freebird and Sweet Home Alabama. Freebird is as sweet a song as you'll hear musically, with some fine guitar and a nice gear change midway from slow to medium and rocking. Sweet Home Alabama is an affirmation of pride in the band's adopted state, and a riposte to Neil Young's Southern Man, which Skynyrd interpret as shoving all southerners into the redneck segregationist bigot bag. There's a lot of good folks down here, they say. Agreed.

They're the only two Skynyrd songs I'd heard before I bought this collection. Listening to the rest, I now know why. Though superior in a pub rock kind of way, the Skynyrd don't qualify in my book as A-list rockers. Certainly there are some excellent flashes of duelling guitar brilliance, there are some smirk-inducing lyrics, and you have your toe tapping much of the time.

But frankly, if I had to choose between the two, I'd rather listen to Drive By Truckers' Southern Rock Opera, their tribute to Skynyrd, than Skynyrd themselves.

I'll be waiting by the stake to be burnt by the same Skynyrd fans who issued the death threats to Neil Young.

Nice music - shame about the presentation!
Others have said it but I will say it again - this is an excellent double CD with all Skynyrd's finest moments captured but the record company's packaging and inability to even get the track listing correct is nothing short of a disgrace!
