A great anthologyI can definitely recommend this as anthology as the best way to get to know this extremely talented artist. If you love great music and like lyrics that make you think then this is the album for you. I listen and reflect with sadness at times that Gil seems to be struggling so much to defeat his own drug demons, but that does not reduce the impact of the inclusions.
The album covers the period 1973 to 1980, but to my ears the quality of the music is timeless. It is jazz, it is soul, it is funk, but above all is beautiful music. The live version of "Home Is Where The Hatred Is" is quite simply 12 minutes of superb music, but perhaps the real gems are the harder to later tracks like Alien (Hold On To Your Dreams) and Madison Avenue.
Much respect to the folks at Soul Brother for putting together the ultimate Gil Scott-Heron compilation. Looking forward to Volume 2!!

A great compilation, including raritiesI like this album a lot. I already had the first six tracks ('Home Is Where The Hatred Is' is the live version from the 'It's Your World' album) and it has to be said that they're among Gil's best, but what makes this CD special for me are the hard to find studio versions of classics such as 'We Almost Lost Detroit' 'Angel Dust' and 'Shut Em Down' and several more. All the last nine tracks are from albums that do not seem to be available at present, and this makes it all the more valuable. 'Delta Man (Where I'm Coming From)' is absolutely haunting and is presented in great sound quality, though it's possible that this one may not be to everyone's taste, due to the fact that Gil's breathing can be heard very clearly, and I have to say it does make him sound rather desperate. That said, I really do like this song. If you want some of Gil's rarities, get this CD, you won't regret it. Finally, I have to point out that there's no rap on this album at all.
