Jo Whiley's Ego Strikes Again....
About 20 years ago - John Peel introduced us Extreme Noise Terror listening freaks to something that (for some of us) changed our musical appreciation. The fabulous and genuinley likeable and energetic Ukrainski Vistupi VS Johna Peela Ukrainian John Peel Sessions br / br /Some 15 years later - Jo Whiley and her grossly over inflated ego tried to force Gogol Bordello on us. Fab. Groovy. br / br /And hugely overrated. br / br /"Start Wearing Purple?!?!" If I were a cd buyer (and I am!) I'd "Start Thinking For Myself" and stop following woefully misguided Radio 1 (fab. groovy. poptastic.) new 'trends'. br / br /These guys are so mediocre it hurts.

Genre Crosser
A refugee of the Chernobyl disaster in the mid eighties, Ukranian Eugene Hütz finally settled in New York and its vibrant Slavik community in the early 90's. Finding like minded people, he soon found himself as the leader of a motley group of gypsy musicians calling themselves Gogol Bordello. The band were a Gypsy Punk sensation in downtown Manhattan, with a debut album and a European tour soon taking place in the early 2000's. However it really wasn't until 2005 that the band really took off. br / br /Gogol Bordello's third album was released in the summer of 2005 on Side One Dummy records; Gypsy Punks Underdog World Strike was nothing short of exceptional. Combining Western music with Eastern European influences, the album's backbone is one of pounding rhythm and outstanding vocal content whilst celebrating Punk in its mildest forms with the accordion and the fiddle, all in all making this album one of the best albums of the century so far. br / br /The album begins with Sally, fusing the fiddle with a beat and snarl that will have you wondering what on earth is going on here, well believe you me you haven't heard anything yet. For track two I Would Never Wanna Be Young Again takes the previous track and injects it with steroids. A truly frantic number which like many tracks on this LP can only be described as truly unique to Gogol Bordello. br / br /Not A Crime follows track two, the first proper sing-along on the album, an instant get out of your chair Grandma effort, it is almost hoedowny but mixed with Punk, Ska and Gypsy roots, like most of this album it borders on the indescribable. br / br /With classic albums, you need a good set of songs one after the other right through the middle, and Gogol Bordello do not disappoint with regards to this record. With Immigrant Punk, Dogs Were Barking and Oh No following each other in close succession, there is no doubt that this album is quite an exceptional piece of work br / br /Track nine, Start Wearing Purple, is probably the most accessible song on the record, a song which will more than likely have you singing it to yourself during the first few weeks after purchase. It's a rather enjoyable number which was the first single released from this record (Double A Side with Sally), and no wonder, the ending isn't bad either with Hütz bellowing from the back of the room, brilliant stuff. br / br /Gogol Bordello with this album have brought to the table a special and incomparable album which not many bands from across the entire history of music could have ever produced. The term banded around to describe this album is "Gypsy Punk", but I think that it is selling this album very short to even attempt to describe it in just two words. Even after writing this lengthy review I feel I haven't done this album the remotest bit of justice. br / br /With so many genres, themes and undercurrents running through it, Gypsy Punks Underdog World Strike really is something you should get your hands on today.

probably the most adrenaline pumping and exhilirating band around!
Having been bored of general student genres of music entering my second year (september2006) a friend suggested that i listen to gogol bordello. Having accumulated an ipod full of samey dnb and hiphop i needed something interesting and catchy to perhaps overt my musical attention to something a bit more alternative. URRRRRRRRRRRRRRRAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!Simply stunning, from the moment i started listening to 'Sally' i was bowled over! The originality of the instrumental mixed with the raw and unique vocals of Hutz was simply incredible. 3 months after having first listened to underdog world strike Gogol came and played moscow where i was studying at the time. To say that the hairs on the back of my neck stood up in this chic, underground cellar style venue when gogol smashed start wearing purple is an understatement to say the least. Singing along to this half brighton beach english and gypsy ukrainian russian was the point when it occurred to me-how is this band not more famous?!Have since bought super taranta which is, if anything even better in some ways, and am currently awaiting their 2006 album "Multi Kontra Culti Vs. Irony" br / br /If you don't buy this album you wil miss out sorely, but if you do decide to buy this masterpiece then prepare to be blown away! br /

favourite purchase of the year so far and there is stiff competition in that department
Well where do I start. My other half come home from work one day several months ago and said someone told him that I must listen to Gogol Bordello. We then caught some of the Glastonbury coverage on the TV a short time later - this included Gogol Bordello performing "Start Wearing Purple". I then went and purchased Underdog World Strike which arrived at work one day, I put my headphones on as I was leaving my office (on the second floor) and by the time I hit the ground floor, I had a big smile on my face. The whole album is fantastic from beginning to end and I will, no doubt, be purchasing their back catalogue before too long. I can't stop telling people about them. I never listen to a band half-heartedly and couldn't live without all of the CDs in my varied collection but every so often a band comes along that makes you sit up straight, open your eyes wide and give your full attention to and they are definitely one of those bands. br / br /Thank you Gogol Bordello so much for making music and long may it continue.

if you think this is good check out Mlah by Les Negresses Vertes. They are defo an inspiration to Gogol B, but with a North African/ Spanish influence.
