It's intricate yet never intrusive and works on several levels - in the same way as a lot of classical music or film soundtrack music. The George Harrison connection may have lead some to believe that this is background music for hippies. But it's so much more than that.

br /Disc 1 is mainly recordings from the 50s and 60s. Disc 2 is, relatively speaking, more "western" - the tracks have shorter running times and feature a wider variety of instruments (possibly even some electronics - it's difficult to tell) and vocals. By the end of the album the focus has shifted from Ravi the musician to Ravi the composer. But don't worry, it doesn't stray too far from the formula: "Cream Goa Trance-tastic Classics" this is not.

br /Ravi Shankar, like Segovia, Ravel, Moondog, Miles Davis and Vini Reilly is one of the great influences on 20th/21st century music. An essential purchase for anyone.
