Uneasy mix of opera and metal
Nightwish have, on the surface, a lot going for them: stunning and powerful metal chords and an opera singer with a rich and commanding voice, surely a winning combination. Unfortunately they just don't manage to pull this off and instead you get an uneasy mix of metal and opera which leaves one feeling like they are almost there but don't quite make it... br /

Nightwish-Master
Nightwish, what can we say? They had a very strong team with Tarja's angelic voice and Tuomas's poised percussion fingers. This album has all of the songs I particularly enjoy and henceforth it fulfils the aim/purpose. I would suggest it to anyone wishing to try Nightwish and they will be simply enchanted by this album. br / br /XxX

Very poor
I was tempted to give Nightwish a try having seen the video for Nemo on the music channels. Now this is a truly excellent song and sounds even better on the CD. Unfortunately the rest of the album lurched between poor, average and in some cases ridiculously bad. pI listened to Wish I Had An Angel several times trying to find something I liked. My girlfriend got it spot on when she said it sounded like a poor Eurovision song entry. To be fair this was one of the worse entries and I listened through the album a couple of times to see if it would grow on me but alas it was poor. pI find it amazing a band can produce a song like Nemo which doesn't fail on any account and then produce such dross. At around the same time I bought Within Temptation's the Silent Force which is excellent.pShame but definitely not for me. If you are thinking of dipping into Nightwish listen to a few of their songs first.

A great showcase of Tarja-era talent
An excellent album, a shame Tarja's not in the band any more! The songs are all good with a range of heavier tunes (Wish I Had An Angel, Dead To The World The Kinslayer) and some more mellow (Sleeping Sun is beautiful) plus a few great covers... Aled Jones eat your heart out, Walking In The Air is brilliantly done! Though I'd have to agree with one of the other reviewers here about the shameful admission of 10th Man Down, and The Siren which is another favourite.brOverall a great introduction to the band!

Good effort, some good songs missing though
I admire the fact that Nightwish have updated their Best-of catalogue with this latest effort that includes a mix of all their albums from 'Angels Fall First' to 'Once', plus some of the 'Over The Hills And Far Away' EP.pPersonally, I dislike the ommission of '10th Man Down' and 'Come Cover Me', which I think is a far better song than 'The Kinslayer', but this is outweighed by the inclusion of classic power metal anthems such as 'Stargazers' and 'Elvenpath'.pIt is rather sad that this compilation marks the end of Tarja's time in the band, but it sums up Nightwish very well and is a very conprehensive collection for beginners, with a few gems for avid Nightwish fans.
