What are EMI doing ?
Years before Gosford Park brought Ivor Novello's works to the mass public of today, I had a 1959 HMV LP entitled "Ivor Novello - His Greatest Songs". HIS GREATEST SONGS The quality of that album, owned by EMI, is far superior to these later recordings of 1961 1975. However, at the end of this CD are some bonus tracks which make the purchase worthwhile. The incredibly stirring 'Rose of England' as sung by Ivor Emmanuel is worth the price of this CD alone. This track was taken from the HMV LP mentioned before. If only EMI would release the HMV LP in full, instead of these poorer compilations.

Best available - rather dated performances of Novello's finest shows
Best available - rather dated performances of Novello's finest shows. Having heard the marvelous Jeremy Northam as Novello in Gosford Park I hankered after more of the same and this is it it seems! Unfortunately most of the renditions are not as timelessy executed as Northams and whilst the voices are mostly good they could be better, as could the arrangements and tempos which go for sugar sweetness rather than the irony wistfulness Northam showed. (Compare "I can give you the starlight" which I hardly recognized in its neo-operatic rendition here) That said as a musical record of the way the West End saw these things in the late 50's 60's its probably spot on. The bonus tracks are a plus, Moira Anderson sounds in top form on and the other 5 are worth having. 78 minutes is also much to praise as is the value price line. Perhaps we can have more of Northam eventually until then pick your playlist for your MP3 player carefully!
