The song is gone.....
Along with a number of reviewers, I am joining in the chorus of disapproval that the song "The Love is Gone", which provides the emotional crux of the film, has been left out. OK so it's a bit cheesey, but it's also a key point in Scrooge's redemptive process and the part is so abruptly edited that it makes almost no sense. Back to the VHS, methinks, if the VCR is still working!

Which Muppet took the song out?
I must concur with these reviews - how dare anyone think they have the right to mutilate, or should I say "perfect" a piece of Art. Very disappointing. If they are worried children will be bored during the song, there is still no excuse for removing it. As a child I found the song excruciatingly dull, so I fast-forwarded when I got to it. If only there were a similar function on a DVD - Oh wait. There is.

Great film, but the dvd should have both versions
It seems there is some confusion about the version of the film on this disc. This dvd contains the original theatrical version of the film i.e. the version that was released in cinemas in 1992. This version cut the song "When Love is Gone" in order to reduce the running time. When the movie was later released on home video (in 4:3 pan and scan, as all films were back then), the song was restored.

Most people seem to have bought this dvd thinking they would be getting the extended video cut with the restored song; however, the dvd is the original widescreen theatrical cut with the song edited out. An earlier dvd was released a few years ago with the extended video version (in 4:3, not widescreen) on it, but this has since been delisted.

Clearly what Disney should have done is offered both versions on their dvd (preferably restored), allowing users to choose their preferred cut. Also missing from this dvd, but present on the earlier release, is an audio commentary by the director (presumably lost due to the difference in running times between the two versions of the film).

While it is nice to have the film in widescreen, it's a shame Disney haven't acknowledged that many of the film's fans treasure the missing song, and either restored it or offered it as a deleted scene, or better yet offered both versions for the viewer to make up their own mind. Instead they have a lot of dissatisfied customers who have grown used to, and prefer, the longer version.

Otherwise the dvd is not bad at all - the picture and sound are very good, but the extras are pretty thin on the ground. The Muppet Christmas Carol is a wonderful family film that not only manages to be witty, entertaining, moving and funny, but also succeeds in remaining admirably faithful to the original Dickens' story. However, this dvd fails to reflect the film's triumph. Hopefully one a day a full special edition will remedy this.

Humbug! for removing the song "when love is gone" I feel cheated, it was a crucial part of the film for understanding the aging bitterness scrooge had from his regret which made him such a miser, you wouldn't leave out how Darth Vadar went from a sweet boy to a monster from the 3rd Star Wars film? It's just something u need to know. I may become bitter myself at least everyone will know why.....humbug again

Best version of a christmas carol ever, my favourite movie, and woo hoo, the naff song with Belle is gone!!!
I LOVE this film and cannot recommend it highly enough
This is the definitive version of a Christmas Carol and the best Muppet movie ever made
Featuring nearly every Muppet character, the casting is fantastic, and the story is so well put together PLUS they remove the awful song in the middle with Belle that set my teeth on edge and I had to fast forward through on VHS- brilliant
BUY THIS MOVIE, you'll watch it over and over
