Endtroducing, The Private Press, Brainfreeze and Product Placement were all superb. But this is pretty lame in my opinion. The bling-bling rapping is very contemporary and not at all in keeping with the style of music Shadow produces. Horrible - I don't know how he got involved in such a disaster.
This mix comes as somewhat of a suprise if you think of Shadow in his UNKLE first album guise or think of his musical style purely in terms of his solo albums. However, DJ Shadow's first love, as exemplified here is straight up hip-hop and whilst he has rose to fame through his futuristic ambient works such as endtroducing and Psyence Fiction, this takes it back to the source - college radio mixes. From an unexpected Crunked-up beggining we get propelled through a crate-digging masterclass of electro, old-school and pimp-swaggering dirty south bumps, with his trademark rare funk thrown in to the mix. There's no 'Blood on the Motorway' moments here, but what you do get is a seamless testament to one of the World's best DJ's love of hip-hop music in all its forms.
