A thriller with some (unintentional?) comedic moments
This Seagal film is set in Europe and is filmed in a dark and sombre way throughout. Having said that, it's a quirky affair in places. The basic story is that Seagal is delivering a 'package' to a wealthy industrialist. He traverses between France, Germany and Poland and in doing so is caught up in a husband/wife domestic dispute and is pursued by the CIA. br / br /There's plenty of shooting here - some of it extremely flippant violence by co-star Max Ryan, who plays his psychotic sidekick-turned-doublecrosser. Some scenes are bizarre e.g. there's an exploding compact disc, someone blasted at close range with a shotgun and out of a window - but he still manages to get back up again, a toilet bomb scene where Seagal jumps out of a window apparently without zipping his flies back up, and a single kick in the groin scene that appears to kill the recipient (as he's propelled right over a balcony and straight into a lake, where he floats away). br / br /Overall, The Foreigner is one for the Seagal fans. It does have some moments, albeit of a curiously watchable and bizarre nature.

QUITE GOOD SEAGAL FILM
THE FOREIGNER is not as good as most of his previous works, but far better than what follows. A quite good story, some good action scenes, and a coll Seagal - what more can you actually want from one of his films?

DREADFUL !
I was unlucky enough to find this film on TV whilst flicking through the channels and was so shocked that i wasted my precious time watching this film i feel compelled to warn others who may be thinking of shelling out some of their hard earned cash on this poor excuse of a film. br /The plot don't make any sense, Seagal is some sort of glorified postman. br /I had my TV up on full volume and still couldn't understand what Seagal was saying. br /The fight sequences were awful with an obviously overweight Seagal moving as little as possible, and the most confusing thing was the use of slow motion, i mean, someone running away after a fight, in slow motion, someone going to grab a chair, in slow motion, i still get angry just thinking about it. br /Avoid like the plague, better still, if you see a copy burn it. br /

The Perfect Film
Forget The Godfather, forget Citizen Kane, forget Sunset Boulevard, Gone With The Wind, Seven Samurai, Goodfellas - in fact, forget every other film you have ever seen in your entire life. The Foreigner is THE BEST FILM EVER MADE. Seagal delivers yet another performance which literally explodes with emotional intensity. He truly is the Brando of the direct-to-video action genre. Unlike so many Seagal films, this one has a story for the ages. It's about this guy who blows up a plane to cover his backside - or something like that, and it's all very confusing and complicated and needlessly detailed and quite frankly not worth figuring out. BUT, there is a massive body count and lots of cool explosions and people being shot and flying through the air and being flipped into frozen moats and guzzing fake wine in Eastern Europe and pretending it's Versaille and double-dealing and all that sort of thing. Anyway, forget the movie itself, because if you expect too much out of the movie you may be disappointed - but The Foreigner is just an awesome movie from every other point of view. I love it and have watched it about forty times. I would rather cut off my own head - no, scratch that - I would rather bend my own elbow the wrong way and throw myself through some plate glass than not watch this movie!

A WEAK SEAGAL FILM
First, I want to admit that I have a bias opinion when it comes to Steven Seagal. I love the man. Since I was little I have been watching his stuff and I own every one of his movies. Recently he was on a bit of a hot streak as well. After the entertaining Exit Wounds and the guilty pleasure that was Half Past Dead, I had high hopes for this movie even though it was going direct-to-video. Ultimately, it isn't bad, it is just extremely average. br / br /The actions scenes for the most part are few and far between and terribly brief. They are also, for the most part, shot with no imagination at all. There is way too much of this slow motion freeze frame nonsense trying to make nothing look like something and it gets old fast. The storyline is interesting, but in the end isn't nearly as complicated as it originally appeared due to the very amateur editing job. The movie was basically rushed out and due to this any chance the film had to reach old school Seagal levels was eliminated. br / br /Still, a moment or two shine through. As I said before I was intrigued by the plot for awhile and was curious as to what exactly was in the package that Seagal's character, Jonathan Cold (talk about bad character names), had to deliver. Seagal still looks good and knows how to throw bad guys around when he gets the chance. Not nearly enough though. As stated before, it isn't bad, it just isn't great either. Definitely weak by normal Seagal standards. Unfortunately, I doubt things will get better. You don't get rescued from direct-to-video hell twice in your career. Exit Wounds was a beautiful comeback, but he waited three years for that picture to come along and he ain't got time like that to spare anymore. br /
