Two and a half starsI can't say I'd ever seen or heard of any of these films prior to buying this budget boxset and after watching them I can understand why. They're a world apart from such classics as The Thing From Another World, Them or Invasion Of The Bodysnatchers.For my money the best of them is The Cosmic Man, which although cheesy, derivative, and ridiculous, works on the same kind of level as Earth Vs The Flying Saucers (albeit on a smaller budget)and has the look and feel of a big studio slumming it.
br /I thought the Man From Venus was pretty awful.An odd mix of American and British talent. It's like an actors workshop play, grimly theatrical in that '50's serious actors workshop kind of way.Everyone takes it very seriously and there's a serious message and it's seriously boring.For some reason the director spends about 10 minutes avoiding showing the Man From Venus' face, but then when he does there's nothing remarkable about it and the director's obviously just copied it from The Day The Earth Stood Still - along with the idea and half of the plot.Poor by American or British '50's sci-fi standard. Films like this can be pretentious,ridiculous,laughable or derivative and still be highly watchable, but this commits the greatest crime of all for this kind of movie - it's boring.Nice print, though.
br /The Flying Saucer.What can I say.There's some interesting use of dialogue dubbed over exterior scenes.The hero's quite engaging.And John Carpenter's probably seen it,because it's set in the Arctic or at least Alaska, and inside a wooden hut, beneath a table, there's a trapdoor that leads down a short ladder to a cavern dug out of the permafrost in which the flying saucer is hidden.Just like in The Thing.That's the most interesting thing about this film. And it's a bad print,too.

ANOTHER GREAT SET FROM THE WADE WILLIAMS COLLECTIONThis is an entertaining multi-disc collection from Image Entertainment for all fans of vintage (mostly 1950s) entertainment. Admittedly, these are not the classics of the genre but certainly worthy entries. This 3-disc set includes THE COSMIC MAN (John Carradine), STRANGER FROM VENUS (Patricia Neal from THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL) and a lesser offering THE FLYING SAUCER (so bad, it's good).

br /You might care to check out these other multiple sets from Image which bring together titles from The Wade Williams Collection, most of them in the best transfers you're gonna get of this cheesy Public Domain stuff.
br /"MONSTER MADNESS COLLECTION" - 4 superb creature features including LOST CONTINENT (from 1951, not the Hammer version), THE GIANT GILA MONSTER (best transfer of this so far), SHE-DEMONS and MONSTER FROM GREEN HELL, all better than they deserve to be.
br /"WEIRD WORLD COLLECTION" - 4 great space exploration movies including the classic DESTINATION MOON;
br /"TEEN TERROR COLLECTION" - not the best set, but it does have a pristine edition of Roger Corman's TEENAGE DOLL;
br /"MISSION TO MARS COLLECTION" - 2 superb movies: the Special Edition of INVADERS FROM MARS (1953) and FLIGHT TO MARS, but also has the worst movie ever made, ATTACK FROM MARS (really called MIDNIGHT MOVIE MASSACRE - don't watch it, use the disc as a coaster - you'll be glad I told you);
br /"FEMME FATALE COLLECTION" - 2 crappy movies but 1 bona fide classic: DEVIL GIRL FROM MARS with the magnificent Hazel Court;
br /and "ALIEN ATTACK COLLECTION" - 4 films, all good, including the wonderful BRAIN FROM PLANET AROUS;
br /Weird Worlds Collection [2006]
br /Watch the Skies! - The Cosmic Man/Stranger From Venus/The Flying Saucer [1954]
br /Teen Terror Collection [2006] (REGION 1) (NTSC)
br /Mission Mars Collection - Flight to Mars/Attack From Mars/Invaders From Mars (REGION 1) (NTSC)
br /Femme Fatale Collection [1954] (REGION 1) (NTSC)
br /Alien Attack Collection (REGION 1) (NTSC)
br /Monster Madness Collection: Lost Continent/The Giant Gila Monster/She Demons/Monster From Green Hel (REGION 1) (NTSC)
br /
br /These sets represent a great saving - if you get all 7 sets, you have 24 movies (mostly great, a couple of duds) for around £50. It would cost well over £100 to get them separately.

br /Happy viewing!
