pThere's no rule against rock anthems from the 1970s in the soundtrack for a movie about a medieval jousting champion, but if you're going to attempt such jarring anachronisms, you'd better establish acceptable ground rules. Writer-director Brian Helgeland does precisely that in iA Knight's Tale/i and pulls off this trick with such giddy aplomb that you can't help but play along (upon witnessing a crowd of peasants at a jousting match, singing and clapping to the beat of Queen's "We Will Rock You," you're either going to love this movie or dismiss it altogether). Other vintage rock hits will follow, but Helgeland--the Oscar®-winning co-writer of iL.A. Confidential/i --handles this ploy with judicious goodwill, in what is an otherwise honest period piece about a peasant named William (Heath Ledger) who rises by grit and determination to the hallowed status of knighthood./p pAs if the soundtrack weren't audacious enough, Helgeland (recovering from the sour experience of his directorial debut, iPayback/i) casts none other than Geoffrey Chaucer (wonderfully played by Paul Bettany) as William's cohort and match announcer, along with William's pals Roland (Mark Addy) and Wat (Alan Tudyk), and feisty blacksmith Kate (Laura Fraser). Of course there must be a fair maiden, and she is Jocelyn (newcomer Shannyn Sossamon), with whom William falls in love while battling the nefarious Count Adhemar (Rufus Sewell) on the European jousting circuit. Add to this an inspiring father-son reunion, Ledger's undeniable charisma, a perfect supporting cast and enough joyful energy to rejuvenate the film's formulaic plot and iA Knight's Tale/i becomes that most pleasant of movie surprises--an unlikely winner that rises up, like its hero, to exceed all expectations. i--Jeff Shannon/i/p

A mediaeval delight
I chanced upon this film by accident, but it's become a favourite for a feel-good, undemanding pick-me-up. The rock sound track sets the tone from the outset and you know that this isn't a film to be taken too seriously, even if there are some touching moments amongst the boisterous goings-on. Heath Ledger is pretty good (and easy on the eye - there, said it); Mark Addy and Alan Tudyk are entertaining sidekicks but Paul Bettany is just wonderful as Chaucer (yes, really) and he steals the show from his first, slightly underdressed, entrance. It's all pretty predictable, Rufus Sewell snarls and sneers and is generally as unpleasant as is required of a baddy but it just sweeps you along in such a good-natured and lively way that you can't help smiling. The two characters who were least convincing were Heath's dad Christopher Cazenove who fortunately had little to do, but alas also the heroine, Shannyn Sossamon whose seems to have been cast on looks rather than acting ability (yeh, shocker, but amongst this crew it really shows up). But hey, this isn't an Ingmar Bergman film, so just sit back and let it rock you.

Sheer Enjoyment
This is a wonderful tale - there's nothing nasty in this film - the characters all develop their own quirks - Paul Bettany is so funny as Geoff Chaucer. Also the juxtaposition of modern day music that rocks to the 14th Century tale of knights and the joust adds to the enjoyment. And despite a really unpleasant baddie, there's a good ending.

Heath
The late Heath Ledger is hot in this movie. Also his co-star is great, I wander why she hasn't been in more movies? If you love history, romance, drama, intrigue, or a good old-fashioned fairytale this is the movie for you. It is about a guy who is an under dog. He works for a knight with his two friends. The knight dies. He has to pretend to be the knight for a fight. They win. They get more money than they have ever seen in their life! He decides he will become a knight. They meet a naked man on the road who says he was mugged. He makes them fake documents to show his lineage. They start battling, meet his love along the way and a friend who helps them woo the ladies and also makes him armour. She's a female blacksmith. There is the baddy who he has to beat at a lance fight. What will happen? Brilliant movie.
