Right from track 1 to track 15 this is a real joy to listen to. I want to play it again and again. Why should this be so as some of the tracks have been recorded many times. To put it simply each track has wonderful melody, which is sadly lacking with much of modern music. The simple arrangements and backing is a real treat. There are also no drums drowning out the vocals. I'm not religious but I'm up lifted by each track. Go out and buy this you won't be disappointed. Even my mum likes it and that's saying something.
I didn't like Alan Jackson's stuff before, finding it bland and samey. But this album is nothing short of TERRIFIC! As I understand it, the recordings started as a gift to his mother, simply setting down some of the old hymns that they would sing in church. The arrangements are very sparse (guitar, piano, organ, some backing voices) but the total effect is immensely powerful. These are songs you may have heard all your life. But on this album they are transformed into fresh, intimate statements of faith. Jackson's understated performance lets each song tell its own story. Whether you're a church-goer or not, the songs become incredibly powerful and affecting in their stripped-down form. This album is a real antidote to the mindless, manufactured pop all around us. Free of mawkishness or "churchiness", the music is simple, spiritual and has a lovely healing quality about it. Buy this CD today, and if you don't like it, give it to a friend - they'll love you for it.
