A sad, melancholy ache pervades Brokeback Mountain, Ang Lee's haunting, moving film that, like his other movies, explores societal constraints and the passions that lurk underneath. This time, however, instead of taking on ancient China, 19th-century England, or '70s suburbia, Lee uses the tableau of the American West in the early '60s to show how two lovers are bound by their expected roles, how they rebel against them, and the repercussions for each of doing so--but the romance here is between two men. Ennis Del Mar (Heath Ledger) and Jack Twist (Jake Gyllenhaal) are two itinerant ranchers looking for work in Wyoming when they meet and embark on a summer sheepherding job in the shadow of titular Brokeback Mountain. The taciturn Ennis, uncommunicative in the extreme, finds himself opening up around the gregarious Jack, and the two form a bond that surprisingly catches fire one cold night out in the wilderness. Separating at the end of the summer, each goes on to marry and have children, but a reunion years later proves that, if anything, their passion for each other has grown significantly. And while Jack harbours dreams of a life together, the tight-lipped Ennis is unable to bring himself to even consider something so revolutionary.

Its open, unforced depiction of love between two men made Brokeback an instant cultural touchstone, for both good and bad, as it was tagged derisively as the "gay cowboy movie," but also heralded as a breakthrough for mainstream cinema. Amidst all the hoopla of various agendas, though, was a quiet, heartbreaking love story that was both of its time and universal--it was the quintessential tale of star-crossed lovers, but grounded in an ever-changing America that promised both hope and despair. Adapted by Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana from Annie Proulx's short story, the movie echoes the sparse bleakness of McMurtry's The Last Picture Show with its fading of the once-glorious West; but with Lee at the helm, it also resembles The Ice Storm, as it showed the ripple effects of a singular event over a number of people. As always, Lee's work with actors is unparalleled, as he elicits graceful, nuanced performances from Michelle Williams and Anne Hathaway as the wives affected overtly and subliminally by their husbands' affair, and Gyllenhaal brings surprising dimensions to a character that could have easily just been a puppy dog of a boy. It's Ledger, however, who's the breakthrough in the film, and his portrait of an emotionally repressed man both undone and liberated by his feelings is mesmerizing and devastating. Basically, everyone else seems to have just said the plot of the film. I will say that this movie is one of the most beautiful, amazing films ever made and is best watched alone, with a clear mind. Heath Ledger is commonly said to have given a brilliant performance, which I agree with completely, on parr with his last complete role as the Joker. However, I do feel Jake Gyllenhaal is very underrated in this film, I love his performance, particularly at the start of the film, though his character's actions begin to get on my nerves towards the end, this doesn't take away from the magnificent ending, which could not be bettered. I have never watched it without crying.

Simply Breath-taking

When ever I say one of my favourite films is BrokeBack Mountain people look at me like I'm crazy (Mainly because I'm 16, A girl and a massive fan of brainless teenfilms or mindless action films)

I saw this film a few months back on Channel Four, I have never sat that long in a seat without moving only to get another tissue ,except for when I watch Lord Of The Rings, I was captivated from start to finish and when my parents came home from their night out they were shocked to see me cryign my eyes out on the sofa. This film is one the most romantic and hreatwarming films I have ever seen in my life. It's one of those films that stays with you for days after watching it. A week after watching it I went out and brought it on DVD...I have since watched it 65 times...and I still cry every single time.

The scenery is incredible, it's so breath taking and beautiful.

Heath and Jake were simply amazing from start to finish and the final line "Jack...I swear" was just heart-wrenching....

I loved this film soooo much and it will be a classic from now til the end of time.

Very good!
Even my mother thought this was a good film, and she can be very critical, especially when it comes to films.

I decided to watch this film recently because I had heard very good reviews. I was not disappointed, although I thought that the film was very slow to begin with, and neither me nor my mother could understand much of what Heath Ledger was saying, although I thought his accent was very convincing!!

A lot of people think that this is just a gay cowboy movie, but it is so much more than that. It is about how important love really is in a relationship.

You may need to watch it twice to fully understand what Heath Ledger is saying.

If you have not watched it, WATCH IT NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

One for a contemplative mood
This film is one of the most beautiful films I've ever seen. Heath Ledgers' brilliant performance is just the start of what makes this such a sad and thought-provoking emotional film. Forget about the 'gay cowboy movie' critics, and just concentrate on what this is....a love story. Beautiful acting, stunning cinematography, attention to detail. For me this film has it all.

actors shine in beautiful drama
Heath Ledger (Monster's Ball) stars as Ennis Del Mar, a man sent to work on Brokeback Mountain alongside Jake Gyllenhaal's (Donnie Darko) character Jack Twist. As work takes its toll, the two fall in love and encounter many challenges as time moves on.

Based on Annie Proulx's novel, this Oscar winning romantic drama brings a sensitive ideology to viewers in a heart warming tale about two cowboys.

The slow moving plot took a while to get into at the beginning but as we see more of the character's personalities does the film start to become intriguing viewing. The plot is excellent in focusing strongly upon the character's personalities and the emotions each go through as they slowly start to bond. His ideology will keep you hooked as it follows many relationship conventions but is told in such a way that it is sad and also portrays realism, which many romantic films do, but in a soppy way.

This drama differs by being less comical and more serious in its nature and you can really feel for the two characters.

This film, I believe, wouldn't have been as great if Ledger and Gyllenhaal not stared in it, they were simply astonishing in their roles as the two cowboys. Both receiving Oscar nominations, the two are brilliant in conforming to their characters, and perfect the nature of their sexuality even more so. Both with their own personal backgrounds we can get an understanding of what they are like and where they have been as the film progresses.

Ang Lee's (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) direction is excellent. I personally love films which have scenes of around 5 seconds long, just beautiful in portraying the character in everyday life, perfect realism which needs to be encoded more into modern day films. Lee captures the intensity of the characters brilliantly with close shots encoded to portray their emotions and one of the scenes towards the end is really sentimental and couldn't have been directed much better.

Brokeback Mountain is a wonderful setting, quite and peaceful in which this story about two people who fall in love could not have been better placed.
