"I am pleading for love"
Based on the notorious Leopold/Loeb Murder case of the 1920's,this is a static but compelling courtroom drama anchored by Orson Welles' dynamic turn as the defendants attorney. Both Bradford Dillman and especially Dean Stockwell acquit themselves well as the thrill killers so bored and disappointed with life that they kill someone just to see what it would feel like. If it all sounds familiar then that's because it is-Hitchcock's Rope covered pretty much the same territory. But while both films feel at times dramatically hollow, Compulsion is graced by arguably the most charasmatic and yes "grandstanding" film actor of 20th century- Orson Welles.
