His music has influenced generations of young musicians. A great album, containing all of Curtis's best known tracks.
Curtis Mayfield's musical legacy has been sadly under-rated. He was one of the first artists to use his music to explicitly support the Civil Rights movement and so many of the songs he wrote had self determination as a (sometimes underlying) theme. Not only did he write and perform some of the eras most memorable music, his own label and his work as a producer set him aside as a true pioneer of Black music. As such he occupies a position as one of the giants of 60's and 70's Soul, and yet there have been few attempts to seriously chronicle his life, either in music or in print.

br /Sadly, whilst any release on Curtis Mayfield is welcome, this set is unlikely to redress the balance in his favour. We are missing such classics as "Pusherman" or "Back To The World", "Hard Times" or "Other Side of Town" and it's hard to escape the feeling that, beyond the first few tracks, the more militant side of Mayfield's output has been ignored.

br /As a result, some choices appear perverse. Curtis endured an artistic low period in the mid 70's yet there are 3 tracks from "Get Give Take and Have", but only 2 from "Curtis", the album that catapulted him to solo stardom - but of course that contained some very strong social comment.

br /Whilst the compilers deserve credit for avoiding some of the more obvious tracks, this cannot be described as a "Best of..." set. If you want to get to the Soul of the man, then I would suggest you start with "Curtis" and go on to "Back To The World" or "No Place Like America", all albums which are easily available and which show the depth of the talent he had, and then get the best album he did - "Superfly"
