Check out Freak Out!I respect anyone who teams up with their mates and makes something so insane with such a low budget! It reminded me a lot of the movies me and my mates would make when we were younger and after seeing it, it really made me want to start doing that again.
It's humour is blatantly aimed at student horror fans so I can see why some people might find it too random but personally I found it got funnier and funnier as I watched it. Some stuff didn't hit the mark for me but it kept me watching and laughing until the end.
There's some nice homages to classic horror movies and the budget production values give it some charm. There's some wicked gore in there too.
If you're familiar with the horror genre and you're looking for something different you should definately check this title out. Hopefully it might open some doors and allow some new-blood directors with talent to get some exposure too.
Well done Anchor Bay for releasing this little gem!

So bad it's... erm... bad...Okay - don't get me wrong. I'm all for a bit of light hearted tomfoolery. I appreciate movies that both lampoon and celebrate the horror genre, and enjoy a good film geek in-joke. And I am always keen to support low-budget independent film making, particularly in the UK. But, try as I might, I found it hard to look upon 'Freak Out' as anything more than... well... a piece of crap.
In their defence, Christian James and company have clearly put a lot of love and enthusiasm into their movie, and it shows. Sometimes this is enough to a excuse a film's failings, as with Jake West's movies ('Razorblade Smile' and 'Evil Aliens'). But nothing can change how badly written, weakly acted and totally unfunny 'Freak Out' is. Gags that must have sounded hilarious whilst brainstorming script ideas down the pub simply don't work onscreen. That it all looks like little more than a glorified home movie is forgivable; so did, amongst others, 'The Evil Dead' and 'Clerks.' But sadly this movie has neither Sam Raimi's visual flair nor Kevin Smith's ear for witty dialogue to support it. And sure, 'Freak Out' isn't aiming for realism on any level, but the gore FX are the weakest I have ever seen. Think 'Noel's House Party' rather than 'Braindead.'
I don't want to be a killjoy. The movie did raise the occasional smile; having spent a good portion of my teenage years as the geek hanging around the horror section at the video shop, it's hard not to relate to the characters and feel some empathy for what the film is trying to achieve. Sadly though, at the end of the day, there's no escaping the fact that this is just a feeble movie, a dirge of tedious student humour and nothing more.
Bah. Humbug. I'm probably just bitter because I haven't managed to make my own movie yet.

Shaun Of The Dead Next DoorSlasher flick obsessed teenager Merv Doody thinks all his Black Christmases have come at once when a deranged killer turns up in his... er... shower, but this camp, flouncey, vegetarian, Dallas loving, incompetent, potato sack-clad loony is closer to Freddie Mercury than Freddy Krueger.
Merv takes it upon himself to use all his knowledge of slash and gore flicks to induct this wannabe maniac into the Fango family hall of fame. Together with the staple wacky best mate, Onkey (think Corey Feldman in Lost Boys or Stiles in Teen Wolf), Merv transforms The Looney into a deranged chainsaw waving, axe wielding, spatula happy psycho. But when the blood starts to fly Merv begins to realise maybe training an escaped mental patient to be a serial killer wasn't such a good idea after all. As they say on all half arsed film covers - with hilarious results!
Freak Out is a comedy first, horror second, paying loving tribute to the High School teen comedies of the 80s and just about every horror movie you can think of (with laugh out loud references to Salem's Lot, Child's Play, Blair Witch and The Evil Dead), it's a mad hybrid of Weekend at Bernie's, C.H.U.D 2: Bud The Chud, Friday the 13th, Teen Wolf, Nightmare On Elm Street, Scream, Halloween and Good Burger.
Shot on a shoestring budget over a period of time it took the Wayans brothers to pollute the earth with 4 Scary Movies, this cheap and nasty laugh riot has more jokes in 5 minutes than every Wayans film put together. Even Blankman. Yes, even Blankman.
Where Shaun of the Dead was Love Actually directed by George A. Romero, Freak Out is The Texas Chainsaw Massacre directed by John Hughes.
If you love horror, you'll love this. If you want a British comedy that breaks the mould by actually being funny, you'll love this. And if you want to see decapitation, zombies, alcoholism, chainsaws, gore, gratuitous shower scenes, vampire lesbians, action, adventure and a dog with a bow on it's head... well... you need help. But you also need Freak Out!

Freaking greatOrder has not yet arrived, but I couldn't wait to sing this films praises. I saw this film, well a version of it over a year ago now before it was picked up by Anchor Bay. It's not an easy one to describe, so ill try the Jamie Oliver method.
Add one dose of Shaun of the Dead, 2 scoops of Weird Science and a tad of California man. Sprinkle a liberal portion of blood, guts and goo. Blend till smooth. For taste serve with a large helping of great gags.
This film has everything for the horror/comedy fan, can't reccomend it high enough, it really is a fresh look on a genre that I thought everything that could be done, had been done.
