"The Producers" (1967)
Mel Brooks' "The Producers" is one of the funniest films ever made. I know the film virtually of by heart. It stars Zero Mostel and Gene Wilder who both give terrific performances as producers who aim to create "the worst play in the world."

Wilder plays the neurotic yet loveable Leo Bloom (I'm not sure if this is a reference to Joyce's "Ulysses") who carries around a blue blanket, and violently strokes it if he feels under pressure. There is a scene in "The Producers" in which Mostel and Wilder fight over the blanket, Wilder finally gets it after shouting violently at Mostel "My blanket! My blue blanket!" During this scene, you can actually the point in which Wilder turns bright red. Another classic scene in the movie comes shortly after the 'blanket' scene. In which Wilder is going hysterical. "I'm hysterical! I'm hysterical!" he shouts. Mostel panics, he shuffles towards his office, picks up a glass of cold coffee, throws it over Wilder. All is quiet. "I'm wet! I'm wet! And I'm still hysterical!" Mostel slaps him. Quiet. "I'm in pain! And I'm still hysterical!"

This is a great example to show the comedy genius behind Mel Brooks. His comedy is iconic. He is one of the most successful Jews in the comedy business (along with Senfeld and Woody Allen) and has made over 20 comedy films. His best are "The Producers," "Blazing Saddles," "Robin Hood Men In Tights," "Spaceballs," "Silent Movie" and "Young Frankenstein."

The best sight gag in the movie is the one at the end of a long day spent by Max and Leo walking around Manhattan and perfecting their scheme. Finally at night they find themselves in front of the fountain at Lincoln Center. The music swells. Leo cries, "I want everything I've ever seen in the movies!" And then the fountain leaps up. Everyone remembers the fountain. The music and the dialogue make it into a punch line instead of just a surprise.

Brilliant
This was an incredibly daring first movie by Mel Brookes that so nearly never saw the light of day. One of THE great comedy movies, with Zero Mostel and Kenneth Mars turning in unforgettable performances. A film not diminished by time that still sparkles like diamond. Those who know it and love it have watched it countless times, there are of course and those who just don't get it...

disappointing due to editing
This dvd version seems to have been edited/censored(?). There is a major lack of continuity at some points e.g. scene ends where Franz Liebkind is about to sign the contract. In the next scene, we see Zero Mostel and Gene Wilder with swastika armbands. Their arms were clear in the previous scene so where did those come from? Again, in their meeting with Roger de Bris, there are some jumps in conversation which just dont make sense indicating cuts have been made.
As a`result, many parts of the story just dont gel and if I hadnt seen the musical I wouldnt have known what was going on.
If a movie has been edited there should be some indication of this in the description so a buyer knows whether to purchase it or not.
