review by: bored person date: 2007-11-19 rating:
looks boring but very effective
BOTTOM LINE:
PROS:
Inexpensive
Functional and basic
Better than most high end mice
Very precise, and has shoulder buttons
shiny
CONS:
If your hands are like meat hooks then it will be too small
Looks dull compared to fancier (and pricier) models
WAFFLE:
Yesterday, my prized Logitech mx518 gaming mouse decided to stop working. During video games I'd shoot a machine gun at a terrorist or small child and the burst of fire would become jerky and deranged as if I was clicking over and over instead of holding the button down. At the time I thought this was a software problem but I eventually became so enraged that I threw the disgusting contraption at the wall, shattering it into tiny pieces.
(The problem has since disappeared with the new mouse (the G3))
Here's a little story
I Went to PC world later that day to replace my old mouse and reluctantly bought the Logitech G3 as the rip off merchants were trying to peddle 518's for a horrific £70 (paid 30 the first time), so I had to go down market.
The G3 admittedly looks dull and is hard to get used to due to its stock sensitivity, but this is where the 'troubles' end (not that they're really troubles anyway).
Whereas my old and apparently superior mouse was 1800dpi, the g3, although being half the RRP is actually 2000. This equates to being able to click on things way across the screen with very little movement and some degree of practice. And, if you're into that kind of thing, you can shoot people in the face with the speed of a ninja.
The mouse has 2 shoulder buttons which can be used for going forwards or back on the internet, or you can program them to do different things depending on preference (I use the left one for stabbing things).
The mouse works well out of the box, but you can also download a Logitech 'Set Point' for free which allows you to fettle with the settings. Personally I don't use it, it's a lot of faf for something you can do in control panel just as easily.
Overall, I'd recommend you buy it because it's the best mouse I've tried, plus it's cheap. It isn't quite as cool looking or 'ergonomic'(comfy) as the pricey 518, but don't let this stop you because it's much more efficient. Plus unlike many, you can use it with either your left or right hand.
