Not so good in the long runPolar heart rate monitors work by recording the tiny radio signal emitted from a belt that attaches around your chest, a bit like a cupless bra in effect. I bought a Polar device last year; it is excellent but the transmitter battery died and, since the battery is sealed in and irreplaceable, I was left with little choice but to buy a new transmiter strap for £30. Polar, when contacted, were exceptionally rude and arrogant in their reply to my suggestion that the battery should be a £5 stand-alone replacement item. The cost of spares is a rip-off!
Don't buy you'll get stung when the batteries need replacing.

Stupid pile of polarThis is the second polar HR monitor that I have bought, and I can't believe I was stupid enough to repeat the mistake. The first model I purchased had an intermittant fault where it would quite frequently stop during the middle of an exercise session and reset itself. All session information would be lost, and all my user information, time, date etc would have to be re-entered. Infuriating.
At cost, I replaced the batteries, but the fault remained. I returned it to Polar who claimed there was no fault with the item.
So, because it seems to be the market leader, I bought this newer model. After about 1 month of working okay, it will now simply not detect a heart rate any more. Frankly, I have already invested too much time into Polar products to warrant investigating it further. I'm just going to change to another brand.
Polar claims this is a ladies model, but I am very sceptical that real research has been done into either how a woman's chest anatomy might differ from a man's (and accounted for the fact that we wear bras, which is exactly where the strap would ideally sit), nor what women are really looking for. Colouring a watch red does not "feminise" it. Polar should consider reducing the watch face so that it is not wider than a woman's wrist.
If yours works, good luck to you. I've struck out twice now, and can only say that my experience with this product is that it is unreliable, and after-care service limited to lengthy exchanges by mail which may or may not resolve the problem.
