Animated Conan-Style Fantasy ...A Visual Treat!Decent 1983 animated feature from Ralph Bakshi who brought us 1978's animated The Lord Of The Rings.
This time, master fantasy artist Frank Frazetta was on board to create characters & assist with the production design.
The storyline, as in 99% of fantasy movies, is hardly original but its sub-Conan The Barbarian plot is enjoyable.
There's plenty of action with all the requisite demons, dragons & monsters. The prehistoric backgrounds are often stunning & all the characters are well animated especially the Princess Teegra whio is voluptuous beyond belief! Larn, the blonde haired hero is also blessed with a suitably warrioresque physique. The anatomical detail, being one of Frazetta's trademarks.
I personally think the animation is superior to 1978's The Lord Of The Rings.
It looks more cutting edge & adult and I certainly prefer good quality, more traditional animation to the CG often used in todays animated movies!
Another film similiar to this, animation wise, is 1985's Starchaser: The Legend Of Orin ( A really good piece of pulp style sci-fi).
Fire And Ice isn't a childrens film by any means! When swords strike & arrows pierce, men and monsters bleed. Lots!!
An underrated, cult classic!

Not really for ChildrenThis came up as a recommendation when I was buying Dragons:Fire & Ice for my daughter.
It is a PG certificate but you ought to be aware that it isn't suitable for some children.
More for fans of the artist or the genre this film.
I enjoyed it but I'm still in touch with my inner Teenager.

OK, it is not LOTR, but still it is a fascinating little known movieI am the first to agree that this is not a major movie, but I always liked it. Ralph Bakshi style is unique and it is simply fascinating - and he didn't make so much movies, so we, his fans, have to like what is available. And "Fire and Ice" is really not bad - some of the scenes are stunning, and the rest is good. There is some Conan atmosphere in it, but also some Tarzan, some War of Fire and even (I believe) some decadent Elric from Mnelnibone elements. It is true however that the dialogues could be better - this is the reason for four stars only.

US Version (BLUE UNDERGROUND) IS Better ValueI am a massive fan of Frazetta's artwork, Sword and Sorcery Comics and Bakshi's Lord of the Rings movie; so when i heard of this Fire and Ice a couple of years back it was a bit of a dream come true. I bought the US version by Blue Underground on Amazon.co.uk just yesterday for reasons i'll explain in a minuite.
First though, the movie...
The concept of the story is rooted in a world very much like Frazetta's fantasy paintings, rather than the usual cheesy Dungeons and Dragons fare. All very primitive and dark; personally i welcomed this approach. The beautiful background paintings reminded me very much of Bakshi's LOTR and the action is nicely animated. The transition to DVD is also very crisp and the extras on the feature disk itself are fantastic.
The movie itself though is deeply flawed. While the look and story concept are soundly pulled off the script is awful. This type of stuff is good with a unique type of dialogue, much like the spaghetti westerns and indeed the cheap Sword and Sandal flicks from the eighties. Surely the Conan-esque Darkwolf could have a few cool one liners? I can't believe that Roy Thomas wrote the screenplay; shame on you man. I have to admit Darkwolf and Nekron were awesome but the princess and her irritating brother were just pants.
The actual pacing is a bit off too; there's too many lingering T & A shots of the princess. This is all well and good, but you don't actually see any T & A, if you know what i mean. And there's the bad juxtaposition of scenes, which seem to make little narrative sense. Then there's the musical score, which is absolutely diabolical.
I personally would have given this edition 4 stars if it included the Painting with Fire DVD, a fascinating documentary on Frank Frazetta's career and if the feature had a better score, the very one thing that the creators could amend for the better.
One the whole i'd recommend this, but only if a fan of Bakshi.
