Cinematography is top notch and the music infectous. Fine acting and the story is, well I'll say nothing and not potentially spoil it for anyone.
If you haven't seen any of the director's work before, try watching some of Kusturica's lighter films, like "black cat white cat" first, before seeing this far darker masterpiece.
I was keen to see this as it had the 95 Palm D'Or and two supportive reviews. The special effects weren't special but that was OK. What was not was the poor acting and disjointed story. The end was interesting and I am pleased I stuck to it through the wandering and over long middle section.
Guys! I got the full lengh of this movie: 7hours long! Truly! Kusturica presented the full version of the movie at Cannes. Tv Belgrade once showed on tv and I've recorded. My God! You wont imagine ho rich of surprises is that movie. Sadly Kusturica wont make all movie version on dvd :(
I FIND "Underground" the most symbolic movie made by an Eastern European director ever. Long, long time after the film finished I was wondering when, why and how Kusturitza chose to use his most incredibly funny scenario to picture ALL THE DEMONS of the old communist Jugoslavia and Eastern Europe??? Several shots from this movie are still the unique documents of the time, showing Margaret Tatcher, Leonid Brejnev, Nikolae Chaushesku, Cadaffi , Jimmy Carter, etc. So, not surprisingly the lady in the red dress had to make her choice, so did she...
