Sam's Town is a tremendous departure for the Killers. Whereas their first album, Hot Fuss, was the work of Anglophiles trying to sound like their musical heroes, particularly Pulp and the Smiths, their second album has set its sights much higher. The Killers are clearly not content with their indie-rock status; from the explosive introduction of the title track, Sam's Town sounds huge. But, thanks to the earnest vocals of frontman Brandon Flowers, and lyrics still rooted very much in the real world, Sam's Town still manages to sound completely heartfelt and honest. In that respect, the Killers show themselves as potential heirs to U2, with an album packed with soaring guitars and driving basslines. First single, "When You Were Young", is a fist-pumping anthem that has all the catchy bombast of Bruce Springsteen's 1980's commercial heydey. Best of all though is "Bones", a song whose crooning chorus and bright horn breaks could only have come from the Killers' hometown of Las Vegas. Hot Fuss may have launched the Killers onto the global stage, but Sam's Town looks set to launch them into orbit. --Ted Kord

Fantastic album
I absolutely LOVE this album! The volume is turned right up for 'Sam's Town', 'When You Were Young', 'Bling (Confessions of a King); 'Read My Mind'..... oh jeez it's turned up for the whole album!!!!!

If you're a Killers fan you MUST own this album!!!

What was all the hot fuss? This one's the real deal
For someone who liked Hot Fuss, but didn't go crazy for it I find it bewildering that so many people think it was superior to Sam's Town. I have to sorry to those people but you are wrong Sam's Town is a fantastic album and clearly superior to HF in every aspect. Hot Fuss was a good first effort and Sam's Town is the coming of age of a band I think are just about the best around. Love it!

Great album ruined by Bones
I was really excited when I heard the Killers were finally releasing their second album...then I heard "When You Were Young" and I had no idea what had happened to them, it was like the Synth-Pop of Hot Fuss had been thrown completely out the window. Part of me wondered if the Killers were really just Brandon Flowers and a backing band, and if he had just replaced the entire backing band for this album but apparently it's the same band which still feels a little hard to believe.

So anyway, just when I grew to think "When You Were Young" was a great song, the Killers released "Bones", and the song was just so awful it put me off buying the album and I decided to not even consider doing it. Things that changed my mind were being sent "This River Is Wild" and hearing the album's third single "Read My Mind". After hearing those 2 amazing songs I knew I had to get the album and I eventually did.

Although none of the rest of the album compares to those two songs ("Read My Mind" easily being the Killers best song) it does have its share of great songs. "Sam's Town", "Bling", "For Reasons Unknown" and "Uncle Jonny" are great songs, songs that make the album worth buying. The rest isn't bad but just not that memorable. While the first 7 songs hint that this could indeed be a great album, the last 5 really bring it down (Save for "This River Is Wild"). One of the nice things about having the UK edition is the bonus track "Where the White Boys Dance" which is another great song.

Looking at my rating part of me feels that 3 is too low but then I remember that this album has "Bones", that song makes me want to burst out laughing, not because it's funny but because it's so bad. If it wasn't for that song I most likely would have given this album a 4 but...the song is there, and it brings down the album too much.

Despite me not thinking the album is great, if their next album has a good lead off single I will most likely buy it because on here not only have the Killers proven they can still write great songs but also that they can try different styles, I just hope they learn to keep the quality more consistent in the future.

"A classic in all senses"
The album is amazing well balanced and layered from the Las Vegans. Highlight songs are the ubiquitous Sam's Town, When You Were Young, For Reasons Unknown, Read My Mind... the list goes on! They have done what everyone has asked for - done in style should I say. Just buy the CD, you won't regret it.

2 Years On
Nearly two years after i bought it and this album is still played more than any on my Hi Fi. It has a great selection of melody changing tracks with perhaps some of the best guitar work i have heard. Its funny the first single 'When We Were Young' is probably my least favorite track. Bling(confessions of a King) however is just fantastic!!!!! Their first album 'Hot Fuss' was full of huge anthems but to me this album even if not so spectacular is musically better. You need a very good Hi Fi to get the best from this!
