Product Description
Nikon proudly presents the long-awaited successor to the D70: the D80! The D80 has a new 10.2-megapixel CCD image sensor and an improved response time of just 18 ms instead of 20 ms, and uses image processing technology that operates at 12 bits per channel instead of 8. It?s compatible with SD cards instead of CompactFlash and has a 10.2-megapixel image sensor, as well as a new image processor for capturing even the tiniest details. It accelerates performances on all levels, ensuring low energy consumption so you can take more photos on a fully charged battery, and comes with a 2.5? LCD screen and 0.94x zoom so you can focus easily. The D80 includes a host of advanced features such as the built-in flash control mode, the image touch-up menu and slideshow creation programmes with different music transition and fader effects (Pictmotion), so you can make your creations your very own. In short, the Nikon D80 has been specially designed for photo fans, traditional SLR camera owners or anyone looking to start out in the world of compact or bridge digital photography.

Superb DSLR
I bought my Nikon D80 just over a year ago and I've never looked back since. It's easy to use, easy to handle, very responsive and gives great results. As far as control goes, you can either do everything yourself, or you can let the camera do it all for you or every combination in between. There are several pre-programmed options, all of which you'll find easy to use after the first couple of gos and the menus, whilst they may be a bit daunting at first, are straight forward within a day or two.

The camera feels sturdy, unlike some plasticy equvalents from other manufacturers, but doesn't (to me anyway) feel over heavy, although if you're just switching to SLR, you'll feel the difference. Anyone who's owned a Nikon SLR before, as I have, will find it a seemless transition and your lenses will fit. Anyone switching from another manufacturer will find this a lot more robust than some of its opponents (not mentioning any brand names)

Its diversity is great, it gives beautiful landscape pictures yet, using the continuous shoot feature, it gets amazing action shots too. Everything from macro to portraits, from night landscapes to the fastest action shots, you won't be disappointed.

I bought the body only because I already owned a heap of Nikon fit lenses but, if you don't already own Nikon lenses, my advice is to go for the D80 with the 18-135 lens. The only other thing I think you need to be aware of is that the memory card doesn't come with the pack, you have to buy it separately.

Comprehensive upgrade!
Having been a dedicated follower of Canon for the last few years, the swap came as something of a surprise to myself to be quite honest. The Canon 350D served me so so well, that I thought I would struggle trying to come to terms with an alternative layout.

Not the case.

The Nikon D80 is not only user friendly, but the perfect step forwards from the entry level DSLR. With outstanding functions and a comfortable build, it is a ideal step forwards.

Being a very choosy character when it comes to all aspects of my camera, I like to test every inch of a camera. From the way it feels in my hand, to the way it handles in the cold weather. Being a very outdoor photographer, I found that with my 350D, it became a little slow to respond when exposed to colder conditions. No such trouble with the Nikon.

Understandably this is not the main selling point, but just one aspect in a long line of superlatives.

A must have for the Intermediate DSLR user!!!

A proper DSLR
I was taking the leap from a 7 year old compact Fuji with a 10x optical zoom to the world of the DSLR. I expected a lot. My first order was a Canon 1000D and after receiving two of them, which were worse than my old Fuji, I decided to try Nikon. I went in to a local shop and had a look at the D60 with the 18-55mm lens and it was so much better than the Canon that I decided to really push the boat out and go for the D80 with the 18-135mm lens. Boy; what a good decision! It as all that I hoped a DSLR would be. Superior picture quality and the ability to take pictures in low light with no flash make it more than worth it. I am, at last, really happy that I went for a DSLR.
(Just be advised that this is a proper camera. It is well built and therefore heavy. It is also not something that you will be able to put in your pocket!)

The best compromise, all you will ever need
'Compromise' is an unfair word for this Nikon D80. It is excellent AND a steal at the price. I bought mine last week. Thanks to all here, I add the following info:

1. Why Nikon? First it is my 'subjective' choice. I feel Nikon is the Mercedes-Benz of cameras. I always wanted one. The brand seems to be very serious. More important points below!

2. Why the D80? 11-point autofocus vs. only 3 for the D40. Great price. Not heavy vs. other more expensive and more professional Nikons. Some people say it is quite close to the more expensive D200!!! I wanted to be at the amateur/semipro level, nothing more. The D80 also suffered a price drop due to the newer D90 with some more bells and whistles, which I do not need. Even the D40 is deemed to be a very good camera. The pros tell us that lenses and ... the photographer can make more of a difference to really great pictures.

3. Which brings me neatly to the most important point: lenses. Nikon has a few great and excellent quality lenses at low prices. I went for the 18-55mm DX VR. Very cheap as a starter bundle - a steal in fact. Later I will add a 55-200mm DX VR. These excellent modern lenses are highly rated and very cheap. Do not be fooled by the sexy DX logo (they just mean the lenses are fit for DSLRs). But VR (vibration reduction) is great. Clear pictures are now possible with less light and without a tripod.

4. This camera is excellent - and undaunting. Quick first and very good snapshots are very easy in full auto mode (you learn that in 10 min). Again, I am no professional. But everybody in the family had their jaws dropping from the quality of the pictures. I had a 6m pixel (NB. pixel count is not the most important criteria!) compact Minolta (4-yr old). Of course you cannot compare but the compact Minolta does some excellent pictures. In fact, the semipro D80 has an easier menu than the compact! Of course, the latter is of an older design.

It all depends on what you want. There are many important criteria for a decision: quality, ease of use, technology, price. Do not underestimate also the way you feel by holding the camera (whether the hold and hand position are comfortable and satisfying to you), weight, practicality and, you guessed it, the lenses available! Save the money from the D90 (a lot) and buy the D80 with some good lenses! A future classic, IMHO. It will still come cheaper than a D90. The amount of equipment for the money is almost indecent.

Amazing camera
I bought this camera about a year ago and its still amazing. It is perfect for me as im doing a photography degree and gives me all the control i need, but its not over complicated. My friend recently bought a D200 an he's very happy with it but feels its just an over complicated D80. So if you are trying to decide between the two, i would suggest the D80.

Also the 18-135mm lens is definatly worth going for!
