Shame about the service
Bought this carpet cleaner a few months ago and, as far as the machine itself is concerned, I am fairly pleased with the purchase. No, it is not a miracle worker and if you are faced with rather grubby carpets (moving into a new home, for example), be prepared to shell out quite a lot on shampoo as on deep-clean setting the stuff fairly runs through the machine - forget about the assurances of the sales staff that the 3 bottle pack will be more than enough for a whole house. Also, the edge-to-edge cleaning is a myth; it simply doesn't do it, so you are left with a strip of uncleaned carpet along the walls. Still, despite all this, it does a good job in cleaning carpets and I would recommend it.

The real problem arises when you have to get in touch with Bissell (I had actually bought the machine from their company website). I had to call them about a small problem with one of the tanks. You can only ever speak to the orderline; they claim not to have any customer service department, no supervisor and no technical means of putting you through to any other department. But they did take down all the necessary information and promised that the tech department would get in touch as soon as possible. They didn't. Next time I called I was send a replacement for the suspected faulty part (again, by the orderline); it turned out not to be the reason for the problem, but without any chance to speak to the tech department I will never know what the real problem is. Stupid as I am, I still proceeded to buy a vacuum cleaner from Bissell, reconditioned. Instead of the one I ordered they sent me another, discontinued model, stripped of all the onboard tools it would normally come with. Replacing them, as suggested and at full prize of course, would have cost me more than buying the machine brandnew. They did not answer any of my emails, they still would not let me speak to any other department apart from the orderline - and the spare parts centre -, they repeatedly lied on the phone regarding the order. In the end I was forced to cancel the order, receiving a cancellation confirmation addressed to "Dear sir/madam", not even my name, and without any "regards", "sincerely" or even a name. And, of course, without any apology.

If you want to go for Bissell, think twice. There are other good carpet washers and vacuum cleaners about, sold by companies which are actually interested in their customers.

Not particularly impressed
I bought this item after reading the glowing feedback left by previous customers and had high expectations for it. I too have ivory carpets and operate a "shoes off" rule, but as you would expect my carpets still get rather dirty. The cleaner is good if all you want to do is give your carpet a quick refresh, but it is pretty useless at removing marks. The solution is expensive and you go through it at a rate of knots if you use the "heavy traffic" setting. I have tried the stubborn stain pre-treater, but after spending a lot of money on my Bissell I still have to resort to Vanish spray to get rid of any marks and then run the machine over the carpet. I also find that, contrary to the manufacturer's claims, my carpets do not seem to repel dirt after cleaning but attract it more quickly. In addition, if you need to stop part-way through (e.g. to use the tools, refill the water), or when you finish a room and move out of it, the machine drips dirty water from it's brushes and you have to get the Vanish out again! I am sorely disappointed with this purchase.

highly recommended
Needed my carpets cleaned so thought it might be cheaper to buy my own machine. Decided on this particular one after reading the excellent reviews. It was very easy to assemble and the instructions simple to understand. I thought it might be rather heavy but found it very easy to use and I'm very pleased with the results. The family are queuing up to use it!! I do agree that the cleaning fluid is rather expensive though. Haven't used it on a hard floor yet, that's my daughter's department!

Excellent highly recommended
I have recently bought this cleaner and very pleased with it, i only bought it by chance as i am a landlord and the tenants that where in the house just about ruined the carpets and vinyl flooring they were disgusting,it was a toss up between new flooring or this machine, the machine won. If there is a down side the solution is a bit expensive, but the end results are fantastic.

I love it!!!
I bought this to replace a two year old Bissell model (which still works; it is just going to reside upstairs now) and am totally impressed with the improvements in design that have been made.

One of the most irritating issues I had with the old machine was that the hose fell off from time to time - not a big problem, but irritating none the less. This has been solved by the addition of a catch. A further improvement has been made to the design of the hard floor attachment - to the extent that it is now fit for purpose. Instead of leaving the floor really wet and not really doing a good job of cleaning, the attachment now leaves the floor pretty dry and, because it picks up more of the dirty water, it is cleaner too!

It is so easy to clean this machine in comparison to previous models - all of the front section can be removed easily (one screw to undo) so that there is no problem removing fluff under the tap. The best addition to the design however is a carrying handle - so much easier to move around the house now.

A minor gripe - I don't know why the gadget that indicated when you had run out of formula/water has been removed from this model. I found that rather useful, but the benefits of this machine far outweigh this small drawback.

I really cannot recommend Bissell carpet cleaners highly enough. The old machine has kept my ivory carpets clean even with traffic from five cats that love to get muddy paws. This one will also do the same for my tiled kitchen floor in addition to the downstairs carpets. I love the new design so much I might even upgrade to this model for upstairs as well....
