Completely stuffed
A 'film noir' that documents a week in the life of a taxidermist. His wife leaves him and he goes on a hunting trip with a fellow taxidermist... From there, life gets rather complicated. br / br /The story unfolds slowly and naturally, and somehow, no matter what's going on, it all makes sense even if it's not predictable. We never know more or less than the taxidermist does, and have to put together the pieces of the puzzle he finds he's fallen into, nothing in the plot handed to us on a plate. br / br /Directing, acting and filming are excellent, the colour is subdued and it lends a tired feeling to the film which suits it entirely. Much of the time the camera stands back from scenes so we see things as the taxidermist sees them, as an observer rather than a participant. br / br /The finish is utterly unexpected and (for me) perfect.

Unusual and strangely compelling
At first one wonders what the film is about but gradually things start to happen and the narrative gathers pace until the explosive ending. It's an unusual mix of mundane and exciting episodes and ones never quite sure what will happen next but it kept me watching for two and half hours.

Excellent albeit extremely unusual Argentinian thriller...
"El aura" is an excellent albeit extremely unusual thriller directed by Fabián Bielinsky. Bielinsky is a recently deceased Argentinian director who was also responsible for other great movies, for example the critically acclaimed "Nueve reinas" ("Nine queens"). "El aura" is very different from "Nueve reinas", but both movies share some common traits, like their originality and the ability to easily enthrall the spectator. br / br /The main character of "El aura" is Esteban Espinosa (Ricardo Darín), an epileptict taxidermist whose favorite pastime is to plan crimes he never carries out. The title of this film makes reference to the specific moments when Esteban knows he is going to suffer an epileptic seizure, something that in his case is triggered by stressful situations. However, and due to the fact that Esteban leads a rather boring life, that doesn't happen a lot. br / br /One day, though, something changes. Esteban's wife leaves him, and, without knowing what to do or what to think, he decides to go hunting to the Patagonian forest.with an acquaintance. That is a strange decision, but things get even weirder when he ends up killing an unlikely prey. The result is a very strange situation that presents him with the unique opportunity of making use of his ability to plan, if he is daring enough to seize the chance. br / br /On the whole, I think that "El aura" is the kind of movie you are likely to enjoy, specially if you are fond of thrillers that don't lack originality. Highly recommended! br / br /Belen Alcat
