Working class lite
This is the kind os film that it is almost impossible to be negative about. The kind of small, independent film that garners kudos from Sundance, it is a feel good film that is finally burdened by its own sense of liberal acceptence. A film that posits an alternative to the bourgeois family, a trio of outcasts from the catholic wannabe culture of working class LA, a part of the city already under threat from the "yuppie" invasion, we are offered an ill concieved party montage that is supposed to emphasise the new banality of house price discussions. 'Pierrot Le Fou' it aint. The drama is the drama of being accepted for who you are losely woven with a new testament allegory. The 14 year old daughter of the local preacher finds herself the recipient of a "miracle" pregnancy, she shacks up with her outcast, tattooed gay brother, who wears the colours of gang culture even thogh we only ever see him as an isolated young man, replete with attitude and goatee but little else and her "wise" great uncle, a man who clerly represents the old and therefore more honest and authentic Mexican peasant culture.
While the old culture, in the shape of the uncle must eventually pass away, the new couple, a couple outside of the normal paradigms (are they the emblem of the post-modern?)are left to reconcile the shifting patterns of Californian culture. A culture that, it is implied will transcend class and race...If only.

A great watch - if you don't mind the occassional sub-title.
Having been studying queer cinema in Film Studies, I was intrigued to have a look at this one.
Firstly I saw the review going in Attitude magazine and had to watch it. It's great story about a young teenage girl who is forced out of her home and live with a relative, her cousin Carlos and his great uncle.

From watching it and discovering that two gay neighbours move in the area and disturb Carlos little habitat, I knew something bad would happen. Whether it be Carlos fault or the neighbours, what happens is unforgivable.

A great watch - if you don't mind the occassional sub-title.
