A glimpse of the pastWhilst from the title this appears to be a biography of Mike Hawthorn, in actual fact it is a review of the 1958 world championship year in which Hawthorn triumphed, pipping the undoubtedly more deserving Stirling Moss by the superior reliability of his Ferrari chassis and some great team work from Phil Hill. The narration is taken from Hawthorn's book, which he wrote shortly before his tragic death in a road accident.
There are comprehensive reviews and footage of the Monaco and Belgian Grand Prix, as well as the 1958 24 hours of Le Mans, which is a nice inclusion. The shots of the almost unbelievable original 8 mile Spa-Francorchamps circuit are particularly daunting and impressive. The interviews with fellow F1 legends Tony Brooks and Moss are also excellent and interesting, with Innes Ireland also contributing some amusing stories. Be warned though that this was a tragic year, with Luigi Musso and Peter Collins both being killed in races in addition to Hawthorn's own death. It certainly reminds you that driving in those days was extremely dangerous.
The DVD is not particularly professionally presented; the sound of roaring engines completely eclipses the narration at several points, which can get irritating, no matter how incredible the engines might sound (and they do!). Overall though a recommended purchase if you are interested in classic F1.

boy's own heroAt last a really good dvd of this genre. It is done in a way that you can follow what's going on (unlike history of motor racing 60's & 70's, see my review). The character of MH is really brought to life by short interviews with his rivals: Moss, Salvadori and the other usual suspects, but they are short and pertinent. The footage is excellent with a real period feel and much of it seems to be original to this collection. The sting in the tale ending is amazing. Great DVD, cheap too!
