By comparison with Dead End, the 'Dead End Kids' first feature, Angels with Dirty Faces seems much less visually imaginative when watched side by side despite the not too shabby combination of Michael Curtiz directing and Sol Polito lensing, but it's still great entertainment. It's crusading drama Warner Bros. style, which means more tough stuff alternating with more schmaltz to make it go down easier with the censors, but it's a tried-and-tested formula that works well. Bogart and the Dead End Kids may have crossed the street to the Warners lot, but it's Cagney's show all the way as the gangster with the devil on one shoulder and Pat O'Brien's boyhood friend turned priest on the other. Kudos to Frankie Burke, though, for his amazing performance as the young Cagney, one of the greatest pieces of inventive mimicry in the movies. And who can resist that last line? br /

One of the greatest movies ever made
Absolute classic, Cagney at his finest. Why is he a legend? Watch his searing performance here and you'll know. There's a lot of "classic" movies about... THIS ONE'S THE REAL DEAL. If you've seen it before, you'll want to own it, if you haven't, I can only envy the experience of first viewing. br / br /Long after the latest modern blockbuster's been bought, watched once and left to gather dust on the shelf, this truly superb movie stands repeated viewing and remains as compelling now as the day it first burst upon the world. br / br /And with its astonishing, unforgettable climax, Angels With Dirty Faces will simply never go out of fashion. Magnificent.
