Amazon.co.uk Review
The movie that helped breathe new life into the summer blockbuster, the success of iPirates Of The Caribbean: Curse Of The Black Pearl/i is remarkable for several reasons. Firstly, there’s the unlikely source material. There’s no previous history of theme park rides inspiring major hit movies, yet that’s just what’s happened here. Secondly, there’s the patchy performance of pirate-related movies over the years (does anyone remember seeing iCutthroat Island/i in a cinema?). And then there’s that performance from Johnny Depp, the one that had Disney executives in a flap prior to the release of the movie. His Captain Jack Sparrow is a fantastic, unlikely creation, proving to be both unpredictable yet utterly compelling. Such is his impact on the film that it’s hardly surprising Depp snared an Oscar nomination for the role. pYet Depp’s performance shouldn’t blind anyone to the film’s many other qualities. The supporting cast, particularly the likes of Geoffrey Rush, Jack Davenport and Jonathan Pryce are all clearly having a whale of a time, while Gore Verbinski’s pacey yet controlled direction rarely lets the momentum slow. And with all their work grounded by a quality script and worthwhile story, the end result is a film that clicks in many, many different ways. pOf course, it’s now proved the inspiration for a pair of sequels, yet no matter how they turn out, iPirates Of The Caribbean: Curse Of The Black Pearl/i will always stand as a quite brilliant example of what happens on those rare occasions when Hollywood blockbusters get it absolutely right. And it’s a treat that can easily be enjoyed time after time. --iSimon Brew/i

blu-ray at its best
Watching this film on blu-ray shows you why it is worthwhile investing in a blu-ray system. The sound and the picture are absolutely stunning in every respect.

Depp shines in fine pirate fantasy
Blacksmith Will Turner (Bloom) seeks the help of a pirate (Depp) to br /rescue Elizabeth Swan (Knightly) from the most haunted ship in the br /seas, the Black Pearl. br / br /Nominated for 5 Oscars, the first instalment of the Pirates trilogy is br /a fine swashbuckling adventure that depicts the legend of pirates in a br /way that is dark but also humorous and dramatic. br / br /Johnny Depp (Ed Wood) is Oscar nominated for his role as Captain Jack br /Sparrow, the pirate with a muddled agenda, and a humorous muddled br /personality. Depp depicts the Captain in a way that is outrageously br /funny, none more so than the first viewing as you will have never seen br /anything like it before. The improvisations by Depp including a fine br /last line are superb. Timing and sophisticated approach to the man br /without a plan is sweet acting at its very finest and though the br /sequels have diminished the protagonist (not to mention awful parodies br /in spoof films) he is undoubtedly different. br / br /Keira Knightly (Pride and Prejudice) and Orlando Bloom (The Calcium br /Kid) are as poor as each other and are always in Depp's light. Geoffrey br /Rush (Shine) is almost as fine as Depp with a talented depiction of br /evil and wisdom. br / br /Depp's performance aside, the best element of this 2003 picture is the br /story. Though for me it took a couple of watches to fully comprehend, br /the narrative revolves around a haunted ship known by the folks as The br /Black Pearl. This element of the film is a symbol of freedom and an br /element of mystery that gives the characters chance to look upon and br /hope for the best. But it's the use of Aztec gold that really gets your br /mind working. The puzzle of the curse that is affecting the crew is a br /weird and wonderful element of the narrative that raises as many br /questions that it doesn't answer. There are twists and turns, none more br /so than right at the end in a final showdown if you like. br / br /The plot is mainly consistent but the political edge frequently br /undermines the tale of legends and pirates. br / br /Based on a theme park ride, Pirates produced millions on release and br /wasn't long before two sequels were drawn up. These undermine this br /first with poor scripted and effect driven stories, but will never take br /the shine of this fantasy adventure, which is a mostly finely acted and br /frequently entertaining picture with a certain character that you won't br /forget in a hurry. br / br /8/10

Captain Pugwash eat yer heart out.
I recently purchased an LCD TV and in order to take advantage of its HD capability I splashed out on a Blue-ray player as well as a Sound bar. While I accepted that I would be getting a superior picture I wasnt exactly blown away by the BR disks I bought . br /That is until yesterday. br /Having ordered this disk over the weekend, I loaded it into the tray and pressed play. br /Talk about revelation. The clarity of the picture is out of this world. Add the sound quality. (Note to self, must purchase woofer) and I was very impressed. However special effects do not make a film. To that end this film is amazing. Fast paced, very funny, brilliant acting and what do you have. br /A decent film. br /Now if only Hollywood could repeat this formula on a more regular basis. br /System. br /TV Panasonic TX-32LZD80 br /BR player Sony BDPS350 br /Sound bar Yamaha HTY750 br /

Entertaining film - but where is the audio commentary?
Enough has been said about the film itself - it's big, it's funny and it's silly. And there might be a slightly mad and charming performance from a certain mr. Depp in there... So far, so very good. (If you happen to like that kind of thing - and I do.) But - here's the rub: A sticker on all three films proudly states that the Blu-rays contain "all the bonus features of the standard DVD version". The highlight of those features, in my opinion, was the audio commentaries, especially the funny one by Jack Davenport and Keira Knightley. Are they on the Blu-ray disc, and, if so, where do I find it? br / br /Does anyone know?

Accomplished, Disney pirate movie combined with a high quality blu-ray finish
Pirates of the Caribbean is a fine, swashbuckling non-stop action movie. The 3 principal protagonists Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley all put in commanding performances to compliment the well written script. There are plenty of twists to the tale that are unexpected and Jack Sparrow seems to change sides almost at a whim. This feature not only combines action with fantasy but enriches the tale with humour and a romance between Wil and Elizabeth aswell. br / br /The Special Effects in this movie are pretty impressive. The transformation from pirate to living dead is a particular highlight and looks incredible in blu-ray. In fact the whole movie looks fantastic in blu-ray and the step up in class from dvd in this feature is really apparent. br / br /The battle sequences are enthralling aswell. The attack on Port Royal and the sneak attack on the Dauntless especially stand out, as does the final sword fight between Barbosa and Sparrow. Furthermore, there is a good deal of humour in this movie; much of it is provided by the character of Ragetti and his sidekick. The monkey is really funny aswell and I like the shock that it delivers to Elizabeth in undead form. Jack Sparrow is excellently portrayed by Johhny Depp and he had me laughing a lot too. br / br /To conclude, POTC the Curse of the Black Pearl is an excellent movie that is a real visual treat in blu-ray and is fully deserving of a 5 star accolade.
