Dull, insipid and insultingThere is clearly an audience for this sort of thing, as evidenced by the glowing reviews that relate to this album. But I have to say that I remain utterly unconvinced by this offering, which sounds like the work of an artist who has listened to the work of other, talented artists from within predominantly black musical genres and concluded that their talent was equal to the task of recording other similarly inspired music. The result is an attempt to cover as many bases as possible which might lend themselves to the word 'funky' and the possible future 4/4 house remixes to be sold to gullible lemmings.
But the lack of conviction and talent shines through. The voice is not strong enough to capture the listeners attention, and the musical material lacks any sense of convincing dynamism. This is coupled with an overriding sense of inauthenticity, which will stand out for those listeners with a sense of musical heritage and for whom the word 'funky' associates with the word 'soul'.
I have no doubt that for those lacking such musical discernment this will be an easy dish to eat, to be simply slipped in to the cd player and used as background music for that barbecue, but for those accustomed to genuine fare this thin sounding weak imitation will hold no attractions. And that begs the question why this material is being presented in the first place? Instead of wasting your money on this Giles Peterson supported nonsense make the effort and go and find where the funk is really at.

Excellent StuffThis album is a fantastic fusion of jazz, soul, drum and bass and many other styles. As the other reviews have rightly suggested this is very similar in style to Jazzanova and ugly duckling etc. I think Gilles and Ben should be praised for creating such an innovative disk of music and if this isn't a big seller i will be astonished.

A Little BeautI only bought this gem a few weeks ago and I'm totally addicted, this little brizzle boy knows how to put a tune together. If you're partial to hip hop beats mixed with a bit of jazz, funk and the odd bit of sampling and scratching thrown in then this will be your cup of tea. Go buy yourself this album and have a good smile to yourself while you listen.
