"Duet" was an intimate session with Andre Previn on piano with bass and drums accompanying on some tracks. "With a Smile and a Song" featured Doris accompanied by a children's chorus. The Doris Day Christmas Album" featured, as you'd expect, songs associated with Christmas and winter. "You'll Never Walk Alone" featured songs of inspiration, a description guaranteed to put off a lot of listeners even if they were, as I was, great Doris Day fans.

br /When "You'll Never Walk Alone" was first issued the cost of an LP record was a week's wages and you had to be very sure you were going to like a record before you parted with your hard-earned cash! I have to frank, the content of "You'll Never Walk Alone" did not appeal to me at the time it was issued and I had never heard a single track from it before I bought this two on one reissue.

br /I played it with some trepidation. I was very pleasantly surprised. Doris Day's sincere and beautifully controlled performances are excellent and do make for an uplifting listening experience. I have never been fan of the electric organ, however, and, for me; its appearance on so many tacks is a definite downside. I am glad I have this album but it is probably the one of all Doris's reissues, I shall play the least in future.

br /I also am not convinced by the choice of partner for the reissue of "You'll Never Walk Alone". "Duet"and The Doris Day Christmas Album" have been reissued as stand alone entities and, in many ways, I feel it would have worked better for "You'll Never Walk Alone" if this had been afforded the same treatment. If it were going to be paired with any of Doris's Columbia albums, I think from a programming point of view, "With a Smile and a Song" would have been its best partner. This would, of course, have deterred anyone not keen on children's choruses and songs of inspiration, seriously affecting the sales potential. Partnering "You'll Never Walk Alone" with "Hooray for Hollywood Volume One" is a disappointing for two reasons: it means you don't get Volume Two, which is every bit as good as Volume One and it isn't really the best partner for "You'll Never Walk Alone".

br /This leaves the casual buyer with a dilemma. My advice would be to get the previous CD reissue of "Hooray for Hollywood" which contains both volumes and only buy this new reissue if the material on "You'll Never Walk Alone" appeals to you. Died in the wool Doris Day fans, of course, will already have both volumes of "Hooray for Hollywood" and will do what I have done: buy this release for the album I didn't have. I find when I play this issue, I am skipping "Hooray for Hollywood" because I want to hear it in its entirety. I don't regret buying "You'll Never Walk Alone" but it won't become my most played Doris Day album and the three star rating reflects this.
