This is a pretty good replacement for the 18-55mm kit lens that usually comes with the Canon 350/400/450D cameras. The main feature is the wider aperture, which is good for two reasons:
1) low light situations
2) shallow depth of field effects, which can make a huge difference to a photograph
Why 4 stars, not 5? Well, it's true that the autofocus is a bit noisy, but that hasn't been a problem so far. The main thing is that the lens is perhaps not as sharp as a prime lens (no surprise). I also have to switch it to manual focussing more often than I'd like.
Still, overall a good purchase, and I haven't put my kit lens back on since I got this one.
