Amazon.co.uk Review2002's popular video-game-derived hit
Resident Evil didn't inspire confidence in a sequel, but
Resident Evil: Apocalypse defies odds and surpasses expectations. It's a bigger, better, action-packed zombie thriller, and this time Milla Jovovich (as the first film's no-nonsense heroine) is joined by more characters from the popular Capcom video games, including Jill Valentine (played by British hottie Sienna Guillory) and Carlos Olivera (Oded Fehr, from 1999's
The Mummy). They're armed and ready for a high-caliber encounter with devil dogs, mutant "Lickers," lurching zombies, and the leather-clad monster known only as Nemesis, unleashed by the nefarious Umbrella Corporation responsible for creating the cannibalistic undead horde. Having gained valuable experience as a respected second-unit director on high-profile films like
Gladiator and
The Bourne Identity, director Alexander Witt elevates this junky material to the level of slick, schlocky entertainment.
--Jeff Shannon
SynopsisMilla Jovovich is back with a vengeance as amnesiac, genetically-altered zombie ass-kicker, Alice, in this sequel to the 2002 hit film, which is based on the video game. This time around the sinister Umbrella Corporation sends a team of investigators into their destroyed underground lab (the ground-zero of carnage in the previous film) and unwittingly unleash the still-staggering zombies and monsters out into the population of Raccoon City. Soon Umbrella has evacuated all of their own key employees and has shut everyone else inside to be devoured. A mastermind chemist's daughter gets left behind in the confusion, and she is the one ticket out for Alice and a handful of dwindling survivors, including the almost-as-tough lady cop, Jill Valentine (Sienna Guillory). There's some nifty motorcycle riding, plenty of bullets and splattering blood, and even a new monster--the hulking, heavily-armoured, seriously ugly Nemesis. Comic actor Mike Epps is great as a pimped-out hustler who handles the whole dead-coming-back-to-life thing with cool nonchalance. In some ways, this non-stop creep show is even an improvement over the original, with a pervasive mood of nihilistic corporate dehumanisation adding extra concern about the future of civilization to the mix of shooting, dying, punching, and munching.

a cracker of a movieI've never played the games, so I don't have a reference point to comment in that regard. I enjoyed this movie, great pace, nasty creatures, evil zombies, and the shadowy and malicious Umbrella corporation - fantastic. We even get an explanation about where the T virus has come from and the motivation behind it. The film advanced the storyline perfectly for the next installment - I can't wait!

only good bits are the special bits!!tbh i thought the first film was a good adaptation on the resident evil story, a little wayward, with some exceptionally dodgy moments and some quite bad cgi (i.e the licker) but as the film was done on a budget a decent attempt. This however, well where do i start.
if you've played resident evil 3:nemesis you'll probably be let down. you will remember the scary streets with horrifying zombies and the scariest (yet very annoying) nemesis bursting out to attack you every which way you turned. This, well... its nothing like that. nemesis is no longer scary, he doesnt pop out from nowhere and try to club the characters to death, just plods about, and maybe shoots some people with his newly aquired minigun. admittidely its not that bad a change, but the story has! its went from the struggle of a few S.T.A.R.S members, into another "im alice and i'll save the world" fest. what happened to the storyline following jill, after all isnt she the main character in the game??? now shes nothing more then a sub character thrown in, just to make it sound more like the game a kinda "we have to put her in, to make the film a tiny bit like the game otherwise people wont like it". i admit it would be hard to make the game into a film, but i feel like they've just used certain locations, and characters just as a backdrop to a new story they just happened to make up, on the day.
saying all that, its not really a bad film, not really scary, but not bad. but as someone who slaved away for hours trying to find a stupid gem to fit into some stupid statue, while getting attacked as you walk down a suspicious alleyway, its just not good enough, and the one bit that really blew it for me and made this film completely stupid. the fact that nemesis has feelings, it just feels tacky and cheap and undermines everything the character nemesis is meant to be.
Although The special features are very good though it cant redeem the film from being just another way to squeeze moeny out of resident evil fans. :(
