Ouais, bof! As the French would sayI hate to say this, but I do believe MC Solaar is running the risk of being labelled 'formulaic'. Yes, on Chapitre 7 the arrangements are varied and on the whole interesting, the production slick (too slick, I reckon) and the general feel of the album initially satisfying, but after a dozen or so listens, I can honestly say that with the exception of the truly outstanding 'Si on t'demande' collaboration with Bambi Cruz and the powerful 'Carpe Diem', it has done nothing for me, and believe me I've tried! I do tend to check the lyrics with this guy, because that's really what's set him apart from the pretty vacuous US hip-hop scene, and previously he's always had his finger on the pulse. Mach 6, his last release, was overflowing with great tunes and serious social/political slamming. Here, there's some real stinkers lyrically- 'Paris Samba' springs to mind immediately, while 'Da Vinci Claude' is not half as funny as it tries to be, and the samples of Hitler's ramblings, De Gaulle's musings and Martin Luther King doing his 'I have a dream' bit do nothing for the frankly crap 'Impact avec le diable'. What's worse is that I reckon even if you don't understand French, the album's weaknesses will ultimately still come across.
If he was still at school, the report would say 'must try harder'. The man's a genius, but 'Chapitre 7' is a bit of a dog, really.
