Best bit of kit I own!Firstly, to give you some idea of how impressed I am with this product, if you exclude my SLR camera, I would say this is my most prized possession! Not bad for something which cost £40 including delivery!
I was after a DVD player which could handle DivX format files (widely used on the internet) which was my only real criteria. I've had a couple of Philips' products before and they've been well-built, functional and attractive so I shelled out £ 40 including delivery from Amazon.co.uk. What I received is a player which has both DVD tray and USB input. This means you can write to a temporary medium such a re-writable DVD or memory stick and not have to permanently use a DVD up. This saves on cost if you're only going to watch, say, a program once. It's also convenient meaning you only have to write what you wish to watch which saves on time too.
This player has a very easy to use interface operated through a small remote control which is comfortable to use with one hand.
It has played all the formats I can throw at it so far. DivX, AVI,WMA,MP3,Audio CD,DVD, you name it, this plays it! I would say the playback from DVD seems more reliable than from a USB device...a couple of "choppy" viewings have occurred from the USB input. This has never happened from DVD so I just use that now. Pictures have never been a problem with USB, just video.
Fast forward is up to 32X and playback can be resumed from where you turned off. Zoom is up to 200% (handy for reading text if you have a 14 inch telly like myself!)
The Audio Menu is terrific. 3D simulation is possible with options ranging from living room to arena! Tone can be adjusted with Sci-fi/Drama/Action settings etc.
For the price I would have no hesitation whatsoever in recommending this DVD player.

continental plug problems!product is very good but came supplied with "continental plug" and adaptor. continetal plug needed to be inserted into adaptor which then needed to be SCREWED up using a phillips screw driver. Its easy but you need to be expecting it and have a phillips screwdriver in the house. Needless to say there were no instructions that I could easily find that alerted me to this! Not a big problem at all but can take the less technically minded by surprise :)

ExcellentThis may be the best DVD player I have owned. I have not had it long enough to comment on its reliability but its functioning is superb. Images, without progressive scan employed, are excellent. The remote control is very well designed: it is compact, has 30 keys as compared to 47 on a Sharp model and is intuitive in use.
The instructions posted by another reviewer for rendering the player region free work and must be followed exactly. At first I thought something was missing but realised that the supplied batteries for the remote were low on power and unless I came close to the player the numbers on the keypad were not registering properly.
I have tried running DIVX files from a re-writable DVD. The picture quality was again excellent and indistinguishable from standard DVD; perhaps this is unsuprising now that compression technology is so good and if the DVD standard were set today DIVX would be the prefered file format. At first I made the mistake of popping in a re-writable DVD to which the DIVX files had been transferred using the Nero utility InCD. The contents of the disc were not recognised. However, the manual makes it clear that the disc must be burned as an ISO data disc; doing so works fine.
I note that it is possible to download software updates for the player and insert them using a CD-R. Presumably, such updates will include advances to DIVX as Phillips has a deal whereby this player supports DIVX files bought or rented from the DIVX company.
It is pleasing that Phillips and some other manufacturers have allowed the region setup codes to leak out. It is scandalous that the film industry attempted to restrict the world market. Not only are most Region 1 discs much cheaper than Region 3 but also the catalogue contains material, much of it of European origin, not available in Region 3 format. The fact that Region 1 discs have NTSC written on them is irrelevant. The files stored on the discs have the same picture information as those stored on Region 3 discs and this player enables the PAL system to work at full resolution.
I strongly recommend this player.

Fantastic, just what I needed a USB connectionBased on the reviews, I brought one of these for my mum & dad so I could easily give them .avi files to watch. It worked like a dream, so much so that I've brought 3 more for my sister, my neighbour and myself.
Can't recommend this highly enough, and can't fault Pixmania-UK.
I use it in conjunction with a "Buffalo RUF-C8G/U2 - 8GB USB 2.0 High Flash speed" which works perfectly and fast.

Whoa! Plug'n'play right from the box.I was a little concerned about going for something so cheap, but I needn't have worried! Plugged it in and it worked straight from the box. Played a disc I couldn't play on my previous player and played a region 1 disc without having to change any settings. Well pleased and I haven't even tried all the features yet. Excellent service from PixMania too.
