Unique!
Out of the ashes of the crazy Finnish group Hoyry Kone came this totally unique - in my opinion - instrumental and acoustic unit. It is extremely difficult to categorizse this music; I've seen it described as ethnic brass punk but I don't think that even scratches the surface. br / br /To describe this music, one needs to imagine the quirkiest progressive folk / traditional music one could imagine; it's like listening to Gentle Giant or Van Der Graaf Generator playing traditional East European folk instruments at a Bar Mitzvah! Gypsy Rock might be a more appropriate description? The closest I have in my collection is an album by XII Alfonso, which touches on a traditional French folk music style, but the origins of this are much further east. br / br /There's a real world music feel to this, largely thanks to the instrumentation, which consists largely of saxes, clarinets, tuba, piccolo, cello, pump organ and percussion. And after all that, can I just say the music is awesome! It's complex yet melodic and extremely lively. br / br /Alamaailman Vasarat (or 'The Hammers of the Underworld') were founded in 1997 and consider their music to have its roots in the traditional but fictional ethnic trends of their own continent, Vasaraasia. Say no more. Madder than a box of frogs, but simply contagious listening and I'm hooked. Give it a chance and I'm sure you will be too! Highly recommended!
