Synopsis
Bollywood and Hollywood entwine for this mix of romance, singing, comedy, dancing, and melodrama, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali (DEVDAS) and produced in tandem with Sony/Columbia. The achingly beautiful Rani Mukherjee narrates and appears as Gulab, a streetcorner princess haunting the red light district in an expressionistic melange of Venice, Vegas, and Amsterdam. The irrepressibly callow musician Raj (Ranbir Kapoor) catches her eye, but Raj thinks he's in love with Sakina (Sonam Kapoor) who prefers to pine away for her absent lover, Imaan (Salman Kahn). All this longing (it's based on Dostoyevsky's WHITE NIGHTS) is stunningly captured through bizarre and elaborate backdrops, winding staircases, torrents of rain, and a colour scheme heavy on the blues. Fans of Baz Luhrman's MOULIN ROUGE will want to live inside this film. The music is always the thing with Bollywood films and SAAWARIYA packs in its share of rousing numbers. Western viewers entering the realm of Bollywood for the first time will find SAAWARIYA ('beloved' in Hindi) to be a crossover film that's ready to welcome them with open arms into a jubilant world of high-spirited song and dance, over-the-top goofiness, anguished melodrama, and romance.

A Bollywood taster
This is the first Bollywood movie that I watched in its entirety. I saw it in a movie theatre in India without subtitles. Maybe the atmosphere within the theatre (Indian moviegoers interact with the on-screen events and show their pleasure/displeasure with rousing aplomb, booing and cheering as appropriate, they are not as reserved as their European counterparts) contributed greatly to my enjoyment of the film.

I loved it! For me this is a great movie and I'd recommend it highly to anyone looking to investigate the Bollywood experience. Its an incredibly colourful movie, the set constructed overall in shades of blue (my favourite colour) and the music is 'something else' a blend of Eastern and Western instruments and rhythms used to excellent effect mixed with strong singing voices.

The lead actors did a fine job of holding my attention throughout the film and I left the theatre at the end feeling upbeat and with snatches of music and colourful images reeling in my head. Altogether an excellent introduction to the genre.

Having watched this movie several times now (I bought the DVD)I still rave about it. My knowledge of Bollywood, though scant, is growing and since this movie I have collected several others and contine to enjoy them also. I now know from experience that there are a lot of 'dreadful' Bollywood films around, this is NOT one of them. If you like music, colourful imagary and a storyline that you can identify with, like me, you'll love this movie.

The worst ever
I am a big fan of bollywood movies but this one has been the biggest disappointed ever. I went to the cinema and already after 30 min I did not know what to do with myself. The story is so boring and there were few moments when I thought it is gonna be end of story and it was going over and over again. The movie is one big confusion. At the end you just dont know what is the story anymore. And the final scene is more than unrealistic. I know that the movie mirrors Pakistani culture but still it is so hard to believe that the girl can be so faithful and wait for the guy over a year, especially that she saw him just once in her life. I dont understand how somebody can have no life at all. If you gonna buy this movie and you saw the other ones with Sharukh and etc I think you gonna be disappointed just as I was. It is a risky business.

beautiful!
I saw this film at the cinema, without subtitles, but still throughly enjoyed it, so am keenly awaiting its release on dvd. It is beautifully shot in a ficticious, artistic setting and supported by a fantastic soundtrack. Lovely!
