WONDERFUL VAUGHAN IS BEYOND VOCAL REPROACH!
Any list of jazz singers would be seriously incomplete without Sarah Vaughan amongst the top contenders along with Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday. Avid's two-disc collection features Sarah smoothly and richly emoting on two notable albums of standards and commercial numbers plus a major anthology of show songs and all benefit from her unique ability to vocally embellish lyrics and melody in her own rich and individual style.

The mid-50's-released MAKE YOURSELF COMFORTABLE takes its album title from the popular number which hovered in the Charts around 1953 and follows through with standards like THE TOUCH OF YOUR LIPS, TENDERLY and I'M IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE whilst giving track space to the lesser-known and light-weight HONEY and GIMME A LITTLE KISS which features Sassy in kittenish girly mood. The other album, WONDERFUL SARAH, emanates from the same period but is more commercially geared towards popular Hit Parade songs like IDLE GOSSIP, JOHNNY BE SMART and MY ONE AND ONLY LOVE. Songs of harmless seduction like EXPERIENCE UNNECESSARY, I WANNA PLAY HOUSE and OH YEAH are fun thanks to Sarah's glossy panache whilst peddling Broadway's current best via AND THIS IS MY BELOVED from KISMET, WHATEVER LOLA WANTS from DAMN YANKEES and the popular title song of MR WONDERFUL can now be viewed as timeless classics.

The major anthology, GREAT SONGS FROM HIT SHOWS was a 1956 released double-album of twenty-four treasures covering the whole time spectrum of diverse stage musicals produced between 1926 and 1951. With every song a winner, Sarah's exemplary styling is the icing on the cake with LITTLE GIRL BLUE (JUMBO -1935), MY DARLING, MY DARLING (WHERE'S CHARLEY- 1948), ALL THE THINGS YOU ARE (VERY WARM FOR MAY - 1939) and THEY SAY ITS WONDERFUL (ANNIE GET YOUR GUN - 1946) amongst a great selection of numbers. On its own, this is an essential album, but at budget-price and linked with the other two, this really is really meaningful collection released with details of recording dates, accompanying orchestras and benefiting from Avid's excellent remastering process. Recommended to those who are new to the magic of Sarah Vaughan; prefer her less jazzy output or simply in need of three wonderful vocal albums to drool over.
