No need for the singing! This film has a great setting. Tony Martin is Pepe le Moko who is wanted by the French and local police. However in order to get him, the police have to infiltrate the Casbah to bring him in, Thomas Gomez takes a direct route by storming in and arresting him - this fails as it has on every occasion before - because everyone in the Casbah is on Pepe's side and he always escapes. Peter Lorre (local police) is more streetwise and befriends Pepe while maintaining that he will one day arrest him. The 2 opposite thinking inspectors need to collude to bring him out of the Casbah in order to make the arrest. They do this by sending an old prison-friend to betray him and lure him out with a love interest (Marta Toren). Yvonne de Carlo plays Pepe's Casbah girlfriend and the ending is not good for those involved in the story other than the police. Pepe is shot, de Carlo is devastated as she has always been in love with Pepe, and Marta flies off believing Pepe has been dead for a while (he has, in fact, been alive and trying to find her but she has been manipulated by the police and told to fly home). The silly parts of the film are the rather laughable serenades that Pepe seems to sporadically break into - no need for any of that nonsense! And Yvonne de Carlo's scream seems a bit forced when Pepe is shot at the end.

Great film noir with music! This little known gem stars the wonderful Yvonne De Carlo as Inez, lover of the notorious thief Pepe Le Moko (played by Tony Martin) - both living within the confines of the shady Casbah. Enter stunning Marta Toren, and Pepe/Tony immediately falls for her and starts planning to leave the safety of the Casbah... but the police, in the form of Peter Lorre and others, are awaiting him. This is really a film noir with songs (four of them), and has great style and very authentic settings. Sadly the gorgeous Marta Toren died tragically young only a few years after the film was released. Highly recommended.

What's missingGenerally, the print isn't bad. The Spanish language version appears to be complete and offers the usual subtitles and language menus or does it? Sadly the alternative English language version is NOT complete (thus it is not simply change language, subtitles off). One scene where Peter Lorre takes from Marta Toren's hand bag (giving him an excuse to go to her) is missing. This makes the plot slightly confusing. Of course, you can always watch it Spanish.
