Sorry for my poor EnglishI am a Japanese.
I bought this English version DVDs at AmazonUK because they are
far cheaper than Japanese version DVDs which are sold at AmazonJP
(The 6 DVDs are no less than 240 pounds in Japan!)
This English version is recorded in three languages;
English, German and Japanese. Fisrt I enjoyed
in Japanese (with English subtitles)and then in English.
In English, Chiyo-chan sounds much older and Osaka
sounds smarter, which was very impressive to me.
I recommend this animation to all of those who are inretested in
"anime" and in Japan. Thank you.

Must-have anime. So, you're probably wondering what makes this anime so special, that you should buy it immediately?
The answer to this question is hard to put into words, though I'll try my best.
1) It's an anime about the crazy lives of some very very strange girls as they make their way through highschool.
2) It has one liners that you'll be quoting for weeks.
Finally, I'd like to mention that it also includes the following:-
1) Giant talking cats.
2) A pervert teacher.
3) Pigtails that may/may not allow the owner to fly.
I'd mention more, but theres too many to talk about here.
Essentially what I am trying to say, is that it's a brilliant, yet odd anime that you can't help but enjoy, and at this price for every episode, you can't go wrong.

A GemI got this partly because it gets such good reviews and partly because I thought it might appeal to my teenage children, being myself (as I thought) in no way part of the primary target demographic. Japanese schoolgirl slice-of-life drama? Meh.
What can I say? I was spot on in thinking it would appeal to my children, but also found it one of the best anime I've ever seen, myself.
It's not easy to explain just what makes this so brilliant. Offbeat character based humour ... while it's not at all like Seinfeld, there's a kinship in the way the show often makes something very funny seemingly out of thin air, and also in a surprisingly unsentimental tone ... given that a major character is an incredibly cute 10 year old child prodigy. The fact that Chiyo-chan never gets irritating and never takes over the show tells its own story.
Just one example: To me one of the funniest scenes consists of just two of the characters sitting on the beach while one of them talks about some oddities in the writing of some Japanese words. Written down it wouldn't be funny at all; the trick is all in the characterization and some impeccable comic timing.
All those 5 star reviews are well deserved.

the way things keep happening like when sakaki gets bitten by the cat is so predictably funny!!
i expected about £30-40 for this but its so worth its money at £25!!

A must for any anime fanDue to people shouting about it on the internet and in my need for a new anime series I decided to see what all the fuss was about. With its fans praising it to such a high extent, I approached it in my usual way; with as much sinicism as possible.
After watching the first few episodes, I decided that my sinicism was correct; nothing really 'happens' as such in this show - there is no overriding plot, just a peek into the world of a few ordinary high-school girls going about everyday life (with the exception of the occasionally weird day-dream from one cast member Osaka). I decided at the time that people merely liked it as it played on their nostalgia from their high-school days; a cheap and cunning trick by the author to make an otherwise uneventful show stand out.
But something amazing happened - I couldn't stop watching. I watched thinking 'yea, I don't know what all the fuss is about, this is crap...", but I kept on watching. It was only by the 13th episode that I realised "Hang on, I'm still watching this, does that mean I like it?", and the answer is an overriding yes.
As you can probably tell by now, it is hard to identify what makes azumanga so great. The cast are reletively normal (as normal as can be) but each has their own little quirks and subtilties that really make them stand out. Add to that great character interaction and some clever diagloue (although some jokes can be a little too Japanese, and without knowledge of some japanese pop/traditional cutlure they can fall flat on you - but this is rare) and you have some good veiwing. But What makes it great veiwing is the unsaid dialogue "between the lines" of the character interactions and conversations. You'll also learn a little about Japanese culture/school life.
Azumanga is a relaxing and pleasurable veiwing experiance. Its not going to make you jump out your seat like an action film, but it will in its own way, hook you all the same and perhapes even more so.
