Editorial reviews

Amazon.co.uk Review
There can barely be an Eagles fan on the face of the planet, after waiting patiently for the best part of 30 years--ignoring the piecemeal (and some might say mean-spirited) sprinkle of new songs on 1994's Hell Freezes Over--that doesn't crave every last minute of this epic stack of original work. But then there also hasn't been a double album in history that couldn't have been improved by shedding at least some of its load and tucking its jeans into its cowboy boots. Long Road out of Eden is no exception to that rule. Much of the first disc passes by in a shuffle of fairly standard, although admittedly enjoyable, mid-beat country-rock (see especially "Busy Being Fabulous") and the appearance of a drum machine on the second hints at a frankly unnecessary dalliance with 80s MOR pop--and one they'd already avoided by splitting the first time around. It's music made by professionals, but lacking the classic, cinematic poise that has made Hotel California a mainstay on the best albums of all-time lists. But then the ambitious reach of the wind-swept, politically charged 10-minute title track really pulls things back, while the pleasant calypso drift of "It's Your World Now", near a cappella melody waterfall of "No More Walks in the Wood" and moody blues swagger of "Somebody" prove there's still just enough wind beneath these wings. --James Berry

I am thoroughly impressed...
It's interesting reading all these other reviews, which tend to be either very positive or very negative. How anyone can possibly be the slightest bit disappointed with Long Road Out Of Eden is beyong me. To me this is one of their strongest releases and damn impressive. Some complain about its length, and that some of these songs shouldn't have been included, but apart from the cover of the dull Guilty Of The Crime I certainly do not agree. Others complain that some of the ballads are too soft and sentimental, but that was always a part of the Eagles sound (The Best Of My Love, I Can't Tell You Why, etc.), so - again! - I don't agree. I wouldn't want to be without Do Something (excellent), You Are Not Alone (very pretty melody) or I Don't Want To Hear Any More. The folk ballad Center Of The Universe gives me goosebumbs - I think it is by far their most beautiful ballad alongside After The Thrill Is Gone (1975). The title track is another favorite: The guitar solo puts a lump in my throat and reminds you why these guys are still up there with the very best in the music business. I could go on and on about these songs (Frail Grasp On The Big Picture, Business As Usual, etc.) - they really are THAT good. If like me you were very apprehensive about Long Road Out Of Eden based on the four, very bland, new songs they recorded for Hell Freezes Over, then do NOT worry. The Eagles are BACK, and they are OUTSTANDING. Every time I am listening to Long Road Out Of Eden in one sitting, by the time I get to the end of it, I am thoroughly impressed and really rather overwhelmed and touched by the fact that they have managed to make such a superior comeback after all these years. Higly recommended!

Its not bad..
I'm not a huge fan of the eagles but there stuff does impress me. The long road out of eden does however have its flaws, being a double disc means enevitably there are going to be "filler tracks". This is certainly the case here and while none of the tracks are bad you get the feeling on some tracks needed that tad more effort. My next point is the most important however and no doubt will get a lot of fans a bit riled up but I have to say it. Any band that is going to put out a double disc album has to make the listener feel the album needed both discs, and in my opinion this album does not. I think the album would have benefited much more from a single disc of the best of the two. Despite these things, the album does have some standout moments and some great song, my favourite being the epic title track opening disc 2. It may be 10 minutes long but the song is fabulous and seems over in a flash. Overall the album is a good listen, certainly more suited to the established eagles fan but good nevertheless

Fantastic eclectic music
As a fan of Hotel California, Desperado etc but not an Eagles afficionado I wasn't sure what to expect from this album but I love it. The styles constantly switch from the folksy "No More Walks in the Wood" to the boyband sound of "What will I do with my heart" to the truly rocky title track to the almost mariachi "It's your world now" and each is musically superb. The other thing I really like about the album is that even though many of the songs have downbeat lyrics whether referring to lost love or to global themes the music always lifts you so it isn't depressing. Been playing it in my car non-stop for a month and I am still not bored!

Well, I think it's great, for what that's worth
I am a little reticent about writing a review when so many others have already blown their hot air. So I will be brief.

I bought this album with low to middle expectations but I was very pleasantly surprised. I think this album is a cracker. Fantastic, quality musicianship. Mature song writing. Some outstanding songs and nothing that is weak. Radio-friendly ballads along with social commentary and proper lyrics rather than the meaningless trash often written these days.

One of the best albums of the 21st century.

Overdue for retirement
If I had written this shortly after buying it I would have given it two of three stars in the hope that it would improve on further listening. That has not been the case. It has got progressively worse. It may be my taste but the joy that came through in their earlier Albums (including the best, Desperado) is completely lacking here. For comparison with another elderly rocker, listen to J J Cale - now that's what I call music.
