I was rather unimpressed the first time I heard it, thinking it was not a patch on Rock Swings. The first track , Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time" shows what a fabulously good band he has. Oleta Adams' "Get here" is a highlight, perfectly suiting the swing medium. The Killers "Mr Brightside" is a noble effort that almost works. Foreigner's "Waiting for a Girl Like You" sounds exactly as you'd expect. Duran Duran's "Ordinary World" is another highlight and possibly even better than the original. Bryan Adams' "Heaven" sounds like it was made for this genre and is another great track. Daniel Powter's "Bad Day" starts well (not that you would recognise the melody) but soon becomes too repetitive and the brass is very honky. A low point. I'd never heard of Billy Joel's "I go to Extremes" but it's another good one. Judy Collins "Both Sides Now" seems to be from a different album, being neither swing nor contemporary. Well sung though. Anka's own "You Are My Destiny" is the 1st of 2 duets, although Michael Buble's contribution is not very noticeable. I've always hated Mark Cohn's "Walking in Memphis" and this version hasn't changed my mind. I'd never heard Bob Seger's "Against the Wind" but this one works very well too. Lastly is another duet with Jon Bon Jovi with a fabulously karaoke version of Anka's own "My Way". The shortcomings of the album are somewhat offset by the bonus disk of Anka's earlier hits from the 50s which is almost a greatest hits CD and an even more enjoyable listen. It doesn't have "you're having my baby" but it has most of his big hits and it includes another duet with Sammy Davis Jr which is fab. To sum up, some of the arrangements are a little too similar for my liking, some don't work but there is enough good stuff on both disks to make it a worthwhile purchase.
I bought the special edition for the original hits and whilst "My heart sings" and "My home town" appear in stereo, "Put your head on my shoulder" and "Puppy love" are in mono which is very disappointing as they were in stereo on rhino's and time life's releases many years ago. Why didn't they use all the stereo masters they have?
yes again paul anka hits us with an album fit for the top of the charts. mr brightside will blow you away and remember the last 5 tracks on disc 2 are new recordings as well. 10 OUT OF 10 PAUL!!!!!!
