Thriller 25th Anniversary
img align="left" src="http://g-ecx.images-amazon.com/images/G/02/uk-music/features/MichaelMessage.jpg" alt="Letter from Michael Jackson" Originally released in the US 25 years ago on November 30, 1982 by Epic Records, iThriller/i, Michael Jackson's sixth solo album and second with producer Quincy Jones, rocketed the former child-star and lead singer for the Jackson 5 into the stratosphere of international super-stardom. Introducing the "robot" and the "moonwalk" into the international lexicon of clubland dance moves via the pulsing sounds of iThriller/i, Michael Jackson revolutionised all aspects of mainstream pop culture--from radio airwaves to the newly emerging art form of music videos--becoming the world's most popular entertainer in the process. p The original iThriller/i spent an astounding 80 consecutive weeks in the American Top 10, 37 of those at No. 1. Seven of the album's original nine tracks became Top 10 singles on the iBillboard/i Hot 100 while individual singles from iThriller/i reached No. 1 chart positions in the US, the UK, France, Italy, Australia, Denmark, Belgium, South Africa, Spain, Ireland, New Zealand, and Canada. iThriller/i made history as the first and only record to be America's top-selling album two years running (1983 and 1984).p In February 1984, Michael Jackson held a record-breaking 12 Grammy nominations, going on to win eight, which stands as the record for most Grammy Awards® to be won by anyone in a single year. Seven of Michael's Grammys that year were for iThriller/i: Album of the Year; Record of the Year ("Beat It"); Best Male Pop Vocal Performance ("Thriller"); Best Engineered Recording, Non-Classical (Thriller); Best Male Rock Vocal Performance ("Beat It"); Best Male RB Vocal Performance ("Billie Jean"); Best RB Song ("Billie Jean"). (Michael's eighth Grammy that year was in the Best Recording for Children--Single or Album, Musical or Spoken category for "E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial"). That same year, Michael Jackson took home eight American Music Awards and three MTV Video Music Awards. The following year, "The Making of Michael Jackson's Thriller" took home the Best Video Album trophy at the 27th Annual Grammy Awards.

Indispensable
This genre of music isn't really the sort of stuff I go for and I turned my back on most of the popular music scene well over 30 years ago. But this particular album is just so terrific in every department that no collection should be without it. The songs, the arrangements, the supporting musicians, the playing, the recording and production ~ EVERYTHING is absolutely top notch. Oh yes, Jacko himself was at his absolute peak as well, delivering his vocal lines with unrivalled panache and confidence. br / br /I find it difficult to believe that anyone needs to be reading a review of this album all this time after its original release. Unless you've been living on a desert island, how can you possibly not have heard it? Tragic that in his personal life he went progressively off the rails from this point on, but as a legacy of just what a phenomenal talent he was in his heyday, this album is arguably the biggest milestone ever in recorded popular music, eclipsing even Sgt. Pepper and Dark Side Of The Moon. Any collection without it is incomplete.

R.I.P. Michael Jackson
Listen again to the extraordinary Billie Jean, and pick out the ten or so separate instruments, each playing their own dynamic chorus. And then there's the voice - that utterly infectious voice. br / br /Not only is Thriller the best-selling album of all time, but also one of the greatest works of art of all time. br / br /R.I.P Michael Jackson br / br /June 25, 2009
