Album ReviewJean Michel Jarre, son of film composer Maurice Jarre, is one of the true pioneers of electronic music. IOxygene/I is one of the original e-music albums. It has withstood the test of time and the evolution of digital electronica. Jarre's compositional style and his rhythmic instincts were his strong points in 1976. While his popularity has escalated exponentially over the years, he never quite achieved the quality of this amazing recording. The innocence and freshness provide most of its charm. Jarre's techniques and ability provide the rest. This epic CD will appeal to fans of Tonto's Expanding HeadBand, Tangerine Dream, Synergy, Kraftwerk, and Klaus Schulze. A classic albumA classic album, as exciting today as it was on its release over 30 years ago. It still sends shivers down my spine.

It took me to another place...!I was 15 years old, utterly bored with pop music and disenchanted with the Stock, Aitken and Waterman 80's takeover. One day, I was at a friend's house and just happened to pass by his big brother's room. The door was ajar. Inside was dark. 'Sweet-smelling' smoke gently issued forth. And there was this sound, this wash of music. I had not heard anything like it before. I was immediately mesmerised, entranced, seduced, taken somewhere else by those incredible soundscapes (or was it the sweet-smelling smoke???)

br /This is a work of art. For my money, I reckon in a few decades or so it will be regarded as a classic, electronic symphonic work.

br /I saw him live in Glasgow and it was then I realised this music was as close to classical as it was to electronic avant-garde. No sequencers, no automatic button-pushing. JMJ and the lads played this live with their scores of 70's synths, their electronic orchestra. And like a classical/acoustic work it would be different each time it was performed. A familiar work yet re-invented with every fresh performance. Magic. Pure magic.

Whiff of fresh air, that's oxygenMy very first instrumental album that wasn't a various artists compilation. Another of my university albums, and another that had an impact. Electronic music at that time was a novelty and Jarre's innovative techniques made this album interesting listening. Twenty years on, I still find it innovative.
